I’ve heard so much about the Muslims and actually missed them last time they were in town, AND I won free tickets – so basically not a thing on earth could’ve stopped me from from seeing the Muslims last night. I’m very happy I went because I enjoyed them a lot. Musically, they were MOSTLY good. I really liked the surf inspired, uh, noise rock? I guess. They are completely different in person and on record. I think that they are confused – partially musically, and 100% confused in their look. Luckily for me, the mathematical equation that describes their confusion in their music and their look is the same: Black Lips (homelessness, music, loudness) + Vampire Weekend (partial look, moccasins, lead singers distant demeanor) = The Muslims? The guitarist and bassist were really energetic – and a mix between prep and homeless. Their drummer …. did not fit the bands look – kind of the same way the last song they played (with the guitarist on keyboard and the lead singer/rhythm guitarist on MC duty) did not fit their sound. The songs they played well that really stuck out to me that have been on repeat all day have been: “Beside Myself” and “Bright Side” and “America”.
