When I saw that BEST COAST was playing the Great Escape, I got so excited. I fucked up so many times at SXSW and missed her, but got the chance to see her at Waved Out and was really impressed with her show. Putting aside my natural predisposition to love Bethany (cats, pot, California, some of my favorite things), I think Best Coast is one of the most exciting new California artists right now. When I first heard ‘When I’m With You’, I was smitten immediately – the scuzziness contrasts with BC’s sickly sweet vocals and she excersizes simplicity (lyrically and musically) in the most perfect way. But when I saw her at the Great Escape, I was struck by the idea that Best Coast is kind of a Miley Cyrus for the indie world – and I swear, I say that knowing that BC loves MC and not on that basis alone. Her music is catchy as fuck and the lyrics tend to be about boys, cats and walks… I don’t know there’s just something about the new songs that strucks me as Miley-esque and I can say that because I was forced to listen to the MC at my last job, anyway, it’s not in a non-complimentary way anyhow. Regardless of my (probably) bad comparison to MC, Best Coast brings it live and is hopefully going to show some of these Britons what California (ie: THE BEST COAST) is really about. She’s also throwing in a huge debut UK tour so if you can’t make it to TGE, check her out at the gigs below…
