Do you hate Vampire Weekend? Do you like Afrobeat but want something less, um, tribal than Fool’s Gold? Well, I think I’ve got the band to meet that fix. Meet Fair Ohs! NRBW favorites, Spectrals, recently did a split 7″ for Tough Love Records that has been on constant repeat round our HQ and I’ve really warmed up to the Fair Ohs side of the split. They’re like Afrobeat meets punk/diy sensibility with that same drenching sense of warmth and sun but urgent and it ends up in this really groovy fun middle ground. Just like Spectrals, I’m surprised by their destinct West Coast vibe – this trio hail from London, what could they know about infusing that kind of warmth and all encompassing brightness into music? Well, evidently they know it and can do it fucking well. In the effort to propogate highly-ridiculous genre names (hi, the blog is called Nu Rave Brain Wave – we love that shit!) I’m going to say that you’re really missing out on these perfect-for-summer jams which we’re now going to call TROPICAL PUNK. It’s undecided on how close this genre is to Flower Punk (Black Lips genre) but will get back to you. Meanwhile, check out the super jam ‘Hey Lizzy’ below and catch Fair Ohs on tour this summer…
