Surely, I’m not the only one who misses the presence of Jay Jay Pistolet aka Justin Hayward Young who enchanted me during SXSW 2009 with his incredible voice and his barrage of simple yet affecting love songs. He left behind the JJP moniker behind and disappeared for quite some time last year, though I kept hearing rumours of his impending return with a full band and I won’t lie, I couldn’t have been more excited. Finally, The Vaccines have returned with Justin fronting, the Horrors’ little brother Freddie McCowan and two other people who I don’t know and can’t find out.

It’s a different side of Justin musically. It’s still got the same spirit that his songs for Jay Jay Pistolet had but it’s a much fuller sound (obviously) but the morosity that was overwhelming before is replaced with a bit more vibrance and energy — and it’s a damn good colour on him. I can’t wait to hear more from these guys very soon, as we head into my discontenment in winter, I’m going to need more of these bouncy, summertime songs. And that’s just a fact. Luckily, the Vaccines will provide us with that.
