My extreme ambivalence about Canadian bands non-withstanding, I discovered a really great little garage-punk band who hails from the Great-North-Cold-As-Shit-Yonder actually worth their weight in ice. If you like your music like I do, as in a little grimy, a lot noisy, catchy as fuck, and leaving you always wanting more then I wouldn’t pass over Alberta’s Myelin Sheaths. The four piece, consisting of two guys and two ladies (I know, I’m putting aside a lot of my musical prejudices for these guys) make raucus, clattering, almost shambolic garage ditties that definitely sound as if they’re coming from America. And that’s the best possible compliment, as we all know America has got the best bands right now. If my recommendation isn’t enough, it’s probably good to know that these guys and ladies put out a 7″ EP on Hozac Records, and if we know anything — it’s that those dudes are pretty fucking on point most of the time. ‘Half-Wit’ is as short as it is catchy and pretty immediate in it’s appeal, and there’s a lot of opportunities for shouting which they make the best of. It’s also got a sick little psychy bit right in the middle. A band truly after my own heart.
Southpaw Records is releasing their debut LP, Get On Your Nerves, so get over and pre-order it. They’re saying that the orders should be out by October 26th. Don’t snooze on this band, for reals.
