introducing :: pete drake

So last night I was doing pretty much nothing and came upon this guy, Pete Drake, in a video with a set where I swear to god I’ve seen Bob Dylan perform. Based on about 30 seconds of performance, I downloaded his album, Forever, and it was the best decision of the day. Pete Drake made his name with his eerie and hauntingly beautiful “talking steel guitar” whereby he used a talkbox and a steel pedal guitar to do the singing. I dunno, it’s really out of my element to understand what the fuck he was doing, but what I do know, is that it is freaking amazing. If the weirdness/amazingness above that I’ve just badly described is not enough for you, may I just add that this man played on every single album Bob Dylan recorded in Nashville. ‘Forever’ was undoubtedly his most popular tune ever, is ridiculous. It’s just so twinkly and warm and haunting. It’s fucking weird and incredible and I demand that you all listen to it immediately. The album of his, Forever, is also excellent. So get that, too.

    I found your post while researching for a short book I’m writing about Pete and his label, First Generation Records.
    I thought you may like to know that Pete actually invented the talk box, and recorded some of Dylan’s records.
    Also, those cool steel guitar parts on the George Harrison records done in Nashville – Pete.

    Here’s a link to a “re-master” CD, wich sounds great!

    The label is now known as Creative and Dreams Music Network, and is run by Pete’s wife.
