introducing :: the moonhearts

Los Angeles’s Moonhearts (formerly known as Charlie & The Moonhearts, but the name, not the person, Charlie was dropped from the band) have been on my radar for quite some time. I even saw them open for Ty Segall on what must be one of the best bills of the year (Ty, Moonhearts, and Sonny & The Sunsets!) and really, really enjoyed what I heard but, naturally, completely forgot about them and now they strike back at me for that with a vengence. I recently picked up their recently released self-titled album, which you should/better purchase from Midheaven, and have been completely head-over-heels for this band ever since. Having heard their music described as ‘slaying asses’ and ‘butt cutter from start to stop’, it’s hard to imagine that I wouldn’t like this shit (pun intended). I also have to admire/love a band who puts a song called ‘I Hate You’ on their first album, and follows it up with a song called ‘I Hate Myself’ on the second album. ‘I Hate Myself’ is, like everything the Moonhearts have put out, shambolic, angsty, fast and completely brilliant basement punk. It’s everything that makes garage, spittle inflected 3-minute jams great: it’s fun and furious, raucuous and immediate. They’re so right: the Moonhearts slay asses. Don’t snooze the way I did.
