There’s something, contrary to the stuff that I mostly listen to, that I really love about loops and samples and that kind of thing being used in a really kind of joyful, breezy, summer way that I just absolutely adore. Don’t believe me? Check out Monster Rally and unouomedude. Now, I have a third to add to this list. Although I know nothing about Gabriel’s fulltime band, Totally Nebular, I’m swooning heavily for his incarnation as Tree Hopping. He released two albums for free, via his bandcamp, and I’ve started falling for The Beat Band. There’s somethign about the lightness of the guitar and the Afropop backbeats that is so appealing to my cold, frozen ears. ‘Freckles’ chugs along (although that doesn’t do the airy feel much justice) before it really picks up with kind of mesmerizing chanting vocals that are underlined by a whimsical guitar line that reminds me uncannily of the best parts of Fool’s Gold. This is the kind of stuff that I love to listen to when I write essays, which you may think is a negative, but actually this fits right along side my Chuck Berry/Bob Dylan writing playlist in a way that I can’t explain in any other terms than it’s awesome. Get on it.
