Appleton, Wisconsin’s Tenement came into my life not too long ago with their second LP, The Blind Wink and it’s become a thing of wonder, fascination, confusion and headbanging for me. Having read many a description of them as a punk/pop, I immediately expected to like this but I found so much more on this album. There is of course, some great pop punk here, not the kind referenced by cool 90s bands but of awesome bands like Lit (see: The Pleasure We Get), but done much better; there’s some straight up punk, some 90s slacker pop (see: Hard To Say), and some surprisingly great almost-ballads (see: Hey Soozie). I really fell in love with (Messing Endings) In Middle America which might be as good as it gets off of a great album — it’s all young, rambunctious energy and tightly wound riffs. The whole album is worth your cash via Cowabunga! Records but you can always stream it in it’s entirety via their bandcamp.
