A Music Blog Focusing on Los Angeles and Brighton

I know, SXSW is just right around the corner and yes, I know that everyone is recommending a million bands. Hell, I’ve rec’d like 15 or so that I think are really awesome and you need to see and you can listen to me on those, if you want. But, what I’m about to say is going to be the most important recommendation I’m going to give.

If I may, I will use Ezra Pound’s words (and manipulate them a little) – “I can only repeat, but with the urgency of 50 years ago: LISTEN TO THE GROWLERS”. Seriously, it will be the best choice you make. Between the two of us here, at NRBW, in the past year, we’ve seen the Growlers like 20 times. As you can tell, we are girls with a wonderful, discerning taste in music who attend only the best gigs with great bands. So what on earth would we be doing devoting so much of our time (20 gigs? Shit, man) to a band like the Growlers. It’s only proof that they are the greatest band on the planet.

They consistently deliver live – the songs take on a whimsical life of their own, coupled with the bands complete and utter dedication to ridiculousness, well, it never can go wrong, can it? Their energy, their perfection, their willingness to wear costumes – I can’t say enough about this band.

But I will say more. Because their songs are ridiculously good. I’ve heard it called freak folk (What year are we in?) and I’ve heard it called alt-country (WHAT?) but really it’s just bluesy-surfy-psychy-rock and fuckin’ roll that’s awash in reverb and tin can recording techniques and it’s perfect. Don’t mistake their craziness for idiocy for freaks, they may be, but idiots they are not – The Growlers lyrics are witty, laugh out loud funny, poigniant, and just plain smart, plus they have a song (Mean People Suck) with the line “All of the gays and straights cum in my hands” – I mean really.

Fucking listen to us, people, for we have been preaching the gospel of the Growlers for a long time now, and their US tour has netted them more and more fans and I think that SXSW will be a definite turning point to getting them more exposure, more gigs, more fans – everything they deserve. They are the best band in the world!

The Strange Boys

If you read this blog regularly, you’re aware of our well-documented love of Austin’s own Strange Boys. Although we’ve not fallen for their second album as swiftly as we fell for their practically perfect ‘And Girls’ LP, we know that their live show will always deliver. They’ve got a new lineup – drummer, sax and Tim Pressley from Darker My Love and it will be interesting to see what they’ve got to offer on the live front now that the stage will be a little more crowded. They’re only playing the Wednesday so they can carry on the rest of their US tour, so be sure to check them out early, while you can.

Harlem

Harlem has been one of my favorite new musical discoveries of the year. You can probably guess what they’re like – lo-fi, garagey music with “hidden” pop tunes. Harlem’s new record ‘Hippies’ is filled with some of the catchiest songs I’ve heard all year long – ‘Friendly Ghost’ is witty and prime for shouting along to; ‘Tila and I’ and ‘Gay Human Bones’ stand out as best of ‘Hippies’. I wouldn’t miss Austin-via-Tucson’s Harlem who will be one of the standouts this year.

Magic Kids

Magic Kids are, to me, kind of what Los Campesinos! were in 2008. They’re a little bit twee, a lot quirky, but all in all a ton of fun. They also have extremely catchy songs – well, the two that I’ve been addicted to were, at any rate. If I was to guess, I’d say they’re going to wind up as just a kitchy little band, not go the way LC! have really, but that’s not to say they won’t put on a fun show in Austin, so I’d catch them, but only if you have the time.

Fool’s Gold

Another NRBW live favorite, Fool’s Gold is going to be playing this years SXSW again. We loved their debut album ‘Fool’s Gold’ with its sense of whimsy, rhythm and communal experience – I even gave it like a 7/10 or something on DiS! – and can’t wait to see how they’ve improved as a live band since we saw them last April. If you’re looking to dance or if you want to have a really fun, uplifting, communal live experience – Fool’s Gold will fulfill that need beautifully.

Surfer Blood

The more I listen to ‘Astrocoast’ the more taken I am with this band – what started out as a casual listen has blossomed into something much more. There’s something instantly likable about their polished tunes – perhaps it’s the voice that owes more to Panda Bear than Cole Alexander, perhaps its the danceable instrumentation, or the delicate heartbreak layed bare throughout the album or even the wit and charm (“Coupled with a weakness for cocaine and liquor”, anyone?) of the entire album. I don’t know which of those things it is but ‘Astrocoast’ is growing on me and lucky for us, Surfer Blood is playing about 5 times a day during SXSW so hopefully everyone will have the chance to catch them.

She Keeps Bees

Lo-fi, bedroom, sexy… What can I say about She Keeps Bees? The interplay between the members, the blues, the dirtiness of the recordings – it all comes together in a really messy little package that’s practically bursting with delight. Jessica’s vocals are beautiful and tortured on record and I can’t wait to see how they translate live. The simplicity and the timeliness of their songs is sure to make a memorable set – don’t miss out on this band – I was forced to on Valentines Day and I’ve been depressed ever since.

Lissie

I’m gonna be straight up honest here – I don’t know a lot about Lissie. But what I do know is that the girl has an enchanting voice. A lot of people reference like 70s Laurel Canyon talking about her – and I have to agree a little bit. There’s something a little country backwoods about her (perhaps it’s because she lives in Ojai) but there’s also something really contemporary, something like female-Fionn-Regan about her. I am basing this recommendation on the strength of her Bob Dylan cover of ‘To Ramona’. Give it a listen. If you’re not taken with her voice, well, you suck.

from reverbnation–”highspire are a fairly beloved shoegaze band that formed almost 10 years ago in philadelphia by alex white and ej hagen. they only put out one full length album, the well received “your everything” in 2003-04. they are thought to have broken up. ”

.…..BUT THEY DIDNT! alex and ej went off to be in the The Morning After Girls
for awhile, but have returned to focus on making a new highspire album, and from what i can tell it’s going to be pretty cool.

Austin TX’s own WOVEN BONES have released (to Forkcast) a new cut from their upcoming LP. I was lucky enough to catch the band twice in December and fall for their scuzzy almost letcherous songs, their primal energy and the southern-twinged vocals. Their forthcoming LP entitled ‘In and Out and Back Again’ will be released on Hozac Records (who by the way are excellent) sometime soon. Check their newest cut out below.

I’ve been doing a lot of searching for the kind of California sound that I’ve been so taken with lately in this cold, cold place I now call home, and it hasn’t been easy. But I’ve found some awesome ones (Sex Beet, Spectrals) and I’ve found another! I got passed Hey Sholay’s myspace through work and fell head over heels in love with their track ‘Dreamboat’. I can’t work out if they are from warm-tropical climates as they claim and somehow just decided to move to Sheffield – but even if they’re just Northern, they infused such a sunny disposition into this song that just wraps around you like warm cotton. There’s something about this that is just clean and to the point, but lately I’ve been drawn to that uncomplicated, unfussy sound and Hey Sholay really encapsulate that into their music. Although there is the tropical element, I really hear something that sounds just so English to me, but I can’t put my finger on it. Regardless, its a 3:32 slice of heaven to get you through the last cold bits of Winter before Spring finally rears her head. When’s that supposed to be again?

Harlem, one of our new obsessions here at NRBW, did a cover of the month thing at some point during the past who knows how long. I came across a really fantastic one and thought I’d share. I officially love this band.

Amazing song that came off the ‘Does She Want’ 7″ that was exclusive to Slovenly Records, but which you can now get a hold of for only $4.50 at Goner Records (great deal, tbh). This shit sounds way cleaner than their 2005 selves really were but with all that kind of racuousness that they seem to have forgotten since they’ve really learned to play their instruments. As with all early Black Lips cuts, Joe has a strong hold over this song and just punches it forward letting Cole’s frankly rudimentary guitar skills kind of slide along. There’s a fantastic riffage moment towards the end, but the shouting is what really gets me. I love this side of Black Lips. Get this.

Not too long ago, I was passed NEVEREVER’s myspace by NRBW friend Lady P (thanks, missy!) and instantly fell in love. Their music encapsulates everything that’s wonderful about California (you’ll be hearing a lot more about that) but in a completely different way than our other favorite CA band (the Growlers – do I even need to say so anymore?). Jihae’s voice is warm and encompassing, there’s hooks for days and highly hilarious and intelligent lyrics. Summery and beachy, lo-fi etc, Neverever really tick every box I have (even got a bit of the UK in there, can you say perfection?) so I knew I wanted to get some questions in with them. They kindly took time out from prepping their upcoming album to answer all my queries. Read all about them below and download a track after. And definitely keep your eyes peeled for the album – it’s going to be a doozy.

So you guys used to be called The Champagne Socialists – why the change to Neverever?
The Champagne Socialists was kind of a temporary name we had and weren’t quite sure about, it seemed too stuffy in a boring way so we wanted to change it. We got asked to put out a 7″ on Slumberland pretty quickly after starting the band and hadn’t come up with another name yet and we wanted the next name to be the one we would stick with, so we just put it out and thought about it later.

Blue Genes 7” came out on Slumberland early last summer, how was it to release your first single as band? And on such an excellent label to boot…

It was great to have our first single out! To see and hear our efforts as a writing team and as a band come to life in the form of mint-green vinyl was super exciting. Wallace and I had never worked as a husband/wife team yet, not musically anyway, so it was kind of like our little first little baby. That sounds stupid, but I guess it’s true. We felt like Greenwich and Barry having a little Brill baby! It was just an added bonus for it to be on Slumberland. It’s crazy how passionate and excited and full of good vibes Mike (who owns and runs Slumberland) still is after 20 years of doing pretty much everything himself! He’s truly an inspiration!

Your music has a retro quality to it – is that conscious or accidental?
We don’t like to think of ourselves as being retro. We definitely have a lot of older influences and certainly listen to a lot of early pop, but we like to think that we bring our own sound and sensibility to the music we make so that it’s fresh and young in a way. We don’t think of ourselves as any kind of revivalist band or anything, it would be boring to be exactly like the music we admire. Sometimes there are certain sounds or aspects of song-writing that we consciously feel very close to and want to work with, but it always comes out with a flair I think we can call our own, something completely different from what it was inspired by. Most of the time it’s just seeped into our brains and it is an accident, but then that’s gone through your personal filter even more so. That’s where a lot of interesting things can happen, but talking about the process isn’t especially interesting, so I’ll leave it at that.

I read that Jihae and Wallace met in Glasgow… What was the one thing you missed most about Los Angeles while in the UK?
Yeah, we met in Glasgow when I was going to school. I was extremely home-sick for L.A. and my family. There wasn’t just one thing I missed, I missed everything. Everything that I took for granted while I was growing up became things I realized I couldn’t live without, not happily anyway. I never realized how much of a California girl I am, she just came out and refused to go back in! I think I was in denial of it a lot of the time growing up, always wanting to be different led me into a long bout of Anglophilia. But that led me to Scotland where I met Wallace, so it all happens for a reason! Sun, I missed the sun.
[ed note: this could literally not be more truthful. this is exactly spot on what it's like to move from CA to the UK, if anyone out there is wondering and considering it.]

And now what do you miss most about the UK?
We miss Wallace’s family and our friends in Glasgow. The U.K. countryside is beautiful in an otherworldly way. I worked at an amazing Indian restaurant that we miss getting free food from…deep-fried pizza was pretty good too.

There’s such an awesome collective of bands in LA right now – do you feel a part of that scene?
There is an awesome collective of bands in L.A. right now, and that’s great for L.A. since it seemed like kind of a joke to a lot of people, in terms of bands, for a while. L.A. has a crazy history in music and has created some of the best music ever made, I think after hair-metal a lot of people forgot about that, and that’s no put-down on hair-metal.
As for being part of the scene, we don’t really feel like we’ve ever been part of a scene. It has it’s disadvantages I suppose, you kind of have to do more for yourself and have a lot faith in what you’re doing. But in the long run, I think it’s kind of a good thing we stand on our own. We don’t feel like we’re dependent on anything. I think that gives you a bit of longevity and keeps you from getting lost in the crowd. If you can get can noticed without being in the scene, I think that’s a really good thing.

What are your favorite LA bands at the moment?
Our favorite bands in L.A. right now…we really like Animal Style, Allah-Las, garbaj kaetz, Devon Williams, Thee Makeout Party, oki-doki, the Audacity, Schatzi and Hazeltine. . .

What’s in the pipeline for Neverever? A full length? Another single?

We just finished our full length album, Angelic Swells. It was a lot of hard work, there were some obstacles that came up but we made it and we’re really excited! Our first engineer got taken to the mental hospital on our way to the recording studio for our first session, and it rained on the day of our photo-shoot, but everything worked out in the end. The engineer is o.k. now too. The album will be released by Slumberland this May just in time for Summer fun. Next we’re shooting our first music video, putting out another single, and then starting on an E.P., so lots to come!

There’s an awesome kind of beachy-lo-fi-throwback group of bands going right now – are you going to keep heading in that direction or do you have any desire to change and try something else?
Well, we’re a Southern Californian band and like I said before, it’s something I can no longer deny, and have come to be pretty proud of. So, the West-coast beachy aspect is very much a part of who we are and what we relate to and I think will always be a part of our music in some sense.
As for being lo-fi, that’s never been what we aim for. We hope to gain the opportunity to move up the fi-ladder and create the lush sound-scapes that our music aspires to be. We’ve got a lot of ideas that unfortunately don’t always fall under a lo-fi budget, so we do the best we can. We’d have 50 tracks of hand-claps, the L.A. Philharmonic, and the world’s finest echo-chambers if we could!
There seem to be a lot of bands at the moment with similar influences in common, but I think we all take those influences and manifest them in completely different ways. I think if you do something you’re passionate about in your own individual way, that’ll show through. I’m sure our music will evolve and change, as it should, but we’ll always have the same passions.

If you had to have one last meal, what would it consist of?
Ummmmm, probably a cheeseburger with fries and a root-beer float, with a Havana Banana Split to follow. Maybe throw in a sampler plate before-hand too.

Do you guys have a favorite hole in the wall eatery in LA? Dish.
Neptune’s Net in Malibu. Sampler plate!!! [ed note: NRBW are fulling planning to check this out ASAP. March 21 after SXSW meal? Yes, please!]

And finally, what’s your favorite Smiths song?
Tutti-Frutti

This week, I’ve got the 39th edition of Bob Dylan Friday. I bring to you one of the first Bob Bootlegs to ever be available in June of 1969. I often take for granted the vast amount of Bob Dylan sessions and tracks available to me and how incredible it would be if I had nothing and then was able to listen to this. I mean I guess the first time I ever heard any Bob bootlegs and sessions I devoured them whole and wouldn’t let them go, so just try to get yourself into a 1969 set of mind: Bob’s got done releasing his big 3 albums, did his ‘65-’66 world tour, crashed, stopped playing gigs and released stuff like John Wesley Harding – and then you get this. Delicious.

1. Candy Man 3:06
2. Ramblin’ ’round 3:15
3. Black cross 4:45
4. Ain’t got no home 2:05
5. Death of Emmit Till 5:26
6. Poor Lazarus 3:23
7. New Orleans rag 1:02
8. If you gotta go, go now 2:27
9.. Only a hobo 3:22

From my new favorite blawg ever, because this track is too good not to pass on, GvsB, “Here’s a punchy, insanely catchy new jam from young Cleveland lo-fi pop prodigy Cloud Nothings, taken from the a-side of his brand new white label 7″, out today via Group Tightener. Limited to 250 hand-stamped/numbered copies, which will inevitably be gone soon. Look for a 12″ in the near future on Group Tightener, and catch Cloud Nothings at SXSW / MTYMX.”

Okay, I’ve been on the troll for something, anything to remind me of Californ-i-aa in this grey, shit filled country I’ve lovingly come to inhabit and come up depressingly empty-handed. Then, the other day, I was heading down to Audio to see Girls and got there in time to see the opener, SPECTRALS. Who I LOVED. Although they performed with a full-band on the night, apparently, it’s kind of a one man show garage rock style. The beauty of it all was how warm and encompassing was – and this dude is from further up in the UK than I am, which amazed me. It was just really bright and enjoyable and most importantly – FUN and didn’t take itself all that seriously, although perhaps it should because the show was AWESOME. It’s short, to the point, got simple beats to drive the reverb and WONDERFUL. The show kept reminded me of things that I love (beach, sun, Surfer Blood, other similar bands) and I actually left the show proclaiming that I’d indeed found the UK’s counterpoint to the best band in the world, The Growlers – which if you ever read this blog, you’ll know that’s fucking high ass praise. If you like anything I’ve been pushing as of late: Wavves, Dum Dum Girls, Eternal Summers, Best Coast, THE GROWLERS – then this will be right up your alley.

After watching a really awesomely mind-blowing gig by KING CHARLES at the December Communion event in Brighton, we were so keen to get our hands on King Charles’ music. So we got his two singles (highly recommended – Time of Eternity is. so. good) and got hooked. Naturally, we had a bunch of questions and luckily for us, Charles gave us a little time to answer some of our niggling questions. Check ‘em out below and download a King Charles track after….

You started making music four years ago – what’s been the hardest thing about working your way up?

Well, I never really thought about working my way up, I suppose I hoped something exciting would happen along the way but I felt that what I was doing was a matter of expression rather than developing a product.

Things have naturally changed and now the hardest thing is maintaining this ideal.

The first time I saw you live was at a Communion club night event and you’re kind of intertwined with the Communion scene and certain bands in that scene (Jay Jay Pistolet, Mumford and Sons). Do you enjoy that link? Do you like feeling a part of that community?

I love being part of a community. I like music made by my friends most because it means the most to me. Whats is extraordinary is the standard set by so many of the people with whom I started my musical direction.

I heard that you like bluegrass and old-school folk – where does that love come from? Can you recommend us an amazing bluegrass album?

Its quite a difficult question to answer, ‘where does love come from’! I don’t really know why I loved that kind of music so much at search an early stage of my musical exploration. It turned the musical side of me on, I don’t even really know why, though I don’t think it was purely about the music. I think there was a aspect of interest in the creators of that music which could be the origin of the connection. Now I think about it, with bluegrass it was the sound and folk it was the content. It seemed to be about real life in an honest way and in unpretentious terms.

If I were you I’d buy the o brother where art though soundtrack, its a great mix tape collection

Where do you find the inspiration to write your songs? Is the inspiration for something like a beautiful love song like ‘Love Lust’ or a heavy, spiritual song like ‘Time of Eternity’ the same? Do you have an all encompassing muse or is it a bunch of different things?

I have 3 main subjects or muses that I write about and that will feature on my album. The First is Girls, The Second is God, The Third is The Passage of TIme. These three things are ceaselessly inspiring creatively and personally and often all three get jammed into one song.

Your music is really kind of primal and even a little bit ethnic, even. Is that inspired by extensive travel?

I’ve been around a bit I suppose, mainly Africa and the Meditarranean, I m no hippy though. All sorts of ideas come from ones experiences overseas.

You have a really awesome sense of style and a very unique image. Is your style important to you? What’s your favorite clothing item you own?

You’re very sweet! I do like clothes quite a lot, and i am quite attached to some of my favourites. I don’t over value style though. I like wearing what I like wearing and try not to over think it.

What’s your plan for music in 2010? We were so sorry to hear about your accident, but we reckon you’ll soldier on valiantly. Are you planning on recording an album, another single or just touring?

Im very close to finishing my very first album, which I am excited about. Im going to release it, tour it and release another single from it. 2010 so far has been very interesting and as the beginning of a decade I don’t intend to let it pass me by. Im getting there in the recovery and youre very kind to be supportive.

If you could have a jam session with anyone in music (dead or alive) who would you choose?

Hmmm… Probably Robin Hood or Marilyn Monroe.

We love Charles and can’t wait to see what KC’s debut album brings to us. Check out our favorite KC track below…

This will be the 3rd or 4th time the Strange Boys have played the best venue in LA aka the Echo, and this will be the first time I miss it. Last time, in June, they had the Growlers opening for them in what we called the greatest lineup ever yet, somehow Liz has managed to almost outdo herself with Chain & The Gang and the awesome Neverever opening. This is absolutely not to be missed.

You may remember me mentioning a band called SEX BEET a while back who are kind of a British take on surf punk garagey lo-fi business – which I find now-a-days the UK does very poorly but this three drunk young men do it VERY well. They keep it simple (one guitar, one guy on drums, and one organ) but very dirty and it’s working really well for them. Although they’re pictured above in Brighton, they have yet to come here since I’ve been aware of them – so hopefully this blog will do something to GET THEM BACK TO BRIGHTON! After hearing ‘Hey Boy’ by these Tenneesseeians (is that right?) I was pretty hooked, but after some recent events – I’ve got to stop getting super excited by bands with one really good song. So then I was twittering it up and saw a link to a new download from the NME Radar piece about their UK Label Boss, Dean Bean. What a name. Anyway, I downloaded it and fell into fits of swoon. I love their old-school vibe that mixes with their kind of wonky-pop modern, almost twee ways. Their mix of retro and silly is really endearing. The download I’ve got for you today is called ‘Superball’ which totally plays off of the nostalgia of childhood thing in a way more obvious way than the rest of the stuff I describe like that, but like the rest, it’s catchy as fuck and a little grating in a good way. Can’t wait to catch these kids ASAP.

The other day, whilst checking Gorilla vs. Bear, on a whim I decided to download this esoteric African, AMANAZ. This is what GvsB had to say that attracted me so much, “I posted about Amanaz’s way sold-out 1975 LP Africa a while back, and it remains one of my favorite musical discoveries of the last few years, so it’s worth noting that the record has been reissued by Now-Again, and is now available for purchase in the Stones Throw/Now Again web store. Fuzzed-out Zambian stoner-psych (“Zamrock”) from the early ’70s, with a dude that sounds like Dikembe Mutombo on lead vocals.”

The preview track for this re-release is not as psych-y or fuzzed out as some of the other tracks (although it exists and it’s lovely) – it’s way warm and encapsulating, the repeated words have a sense of wistfulness and melancholy for all it’s warmth. Excellent find – and one of my favorites so far of 2010.

We got the opportunity to get in some questions to one of the burgeoning stars of 2010, the witty, intriguing, talented Lail Arad. Blessed with a beautiful voice and a sharp voice, Lail answered some of our questions prior to the release of her debut album – soon! – on Notify Music.

Hi Lail, thanks for answering some of our questions!

Hello!

Is having a definite narrative in a song important to you? How consciously do you write coherent tales in your songs?

Its true a lot of my songs seem to be story songs. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but I guess it’s a natural way for me to relay my experiences. I like a lot of singers (Loudon Wainwright III, Jonathan Richman) who tell stories so well. Its definitely not a rule though.

I’ve read a lot of people saying your lyrics are introspective – do you agree? Or is there a part of you in the songs and a part of a character?

I largely agree… Most of my songs are very honest, based on real events, real feelings.. But of course I use my poetic license liberally, and twist or zoom in on details if it serves the song better. I’m not sure I’d choose the word ‘introspective’, its equally about looking outwards at other people, but yes, its very much me in the songs.

Having said that ‘Who Am I’, the first download, is probably the song from the album that’s furthest from reality – the sentiments are based in truth but the character took over in that one!

Your song to Adam Green was hilarious – how important to you is it to have a sense of humor in your music?

Its important to me to have a sense of humour in general…and that extends to the songs! That particular Adam Green video I made quite a while ago and it uses humour in a very direct and…exploitative way! The songs on the album are more bitter-sweet I’d say. The humour comes from an honest place.

You say you’ve always had a slight outsider perspective, but your songs are so relatable, what do you attribute that to?

I’m happy you think so – for me a good song is one in which you can be very specific and intimate, and yet a lot of people can relate. Maybe being able to look at situations from a different angle allows you to see them more clearly? I don’t really know.

What was your favorite gig that you played last year? What was your favorite gig that you saw last year?

Hard to choose! I really loved playing for Book Slam – their crowd manages to be attentive and boisterous at the same time. That might be the perfect combination!

I saw over 150 gigs last year so this one’s really hard to choose… can I have two if they both begin with the same letter?! Jeffrey Lewis’ secret gig at the Betsey Trotwood and Jonathan Richman at The Hoxton Square Bar, both just incredible.

Would you ever live anywhere else but London? Do you ever get overwhelmed by the city or do you draw inspiration from it?

Well I was born here so funnily enough after all the talk about being an outsider and a second-generation immigrant and people asking me about my dubious accent… London is home. Its pace suits me, it would be hard to find somewhere else that competes culturally, where there’s so much choice that you can build your own village. But there are many cities I love…and many more I’ve not yet reached.

What can we expect from your debut album?

12 songs! It was important to me to make each song its own boss and give it what it wanted – some were very greedy and thought they deserved horns and strings…others wanted to be left alone..

Better not to expect anything, then you can only be surprised!

I read that you play the piano and the guitar – do you man any other instruments on the album or is it piano/guitar driven?

I learnt piano and taught myself the guitar enough to write on and play shows – but I have a musician that I work with, Roi Erez, who plays both much better than me and he’s playing most of what you hear on the album, as well as lots of guest musicians we brought in.

What are your touring plans for 2010? Are you going to gear up for the release of your album by doing a big UK tour?

I hope so!

One of my favorite parts of going to gigs is finding the late-night, hole-in-the-wall food places – do you have a favorite joint to eat after gigs?

The 24 hour bagel shop on brick lane has served us well. There is a Planet Organic above the studio where we recorded the album. We owe a lot to them!

This Valentines Day, instead of crying into my dog’s neck and binging on chocolate (okay….there was a little of that), I rounded up a few of my favorite ladies and we went down to 1822 Sunset Boulevard to Part Time Punks’ aptly-timed My Bloody Valentine tribute night. Each band covered a song or two from YOU GUESSED IT My Bloody Valentine and in between the PTP DJs played our favorite ear-drum shattering shoegaze, and have you ever seen people try to dance to this?. Hi-larious!

But the main reason I went was for THE MEEK! They are one of my favorites in LA and they don’t play too many shows so I try to catch them when possible. Not only did they cover MBV’s “I Can’t See It (But I Can’t Feel It)”, but also a fantastic little Icelandic band called SINGAPORE SLING’s Life is Killing My Rock and Roll, which sadly was only recognized and appreciated by maybe 8 audience members. The set was unabashedly dark as always, the death-rattling tambourine just barely breaking through the iron fortress of fuzz and feedback. Vocals are shared by Jeff and Amy Lee, equally, well cool in that detached sort of way. To snootily compare them to one Jesus and Mary Chain, like the kids who looked like Jeffree Star threw up all over them were doing, would be lazy and trite. Who are you?! Get out! THE MEEK RULE!

Did you need any further proof that the Growlers are the greatest band in the world? Can you imagine these ridiculous dudes cruising around the USA in this van? Holy shit.

Also, I have 0 proof that this is their tour van, as they only posted a photo on facebook, but I’d like to think they are cruising around town in this.

Valentines Day gave us single Brightonians a couple of options. We could see the Soft Pack at Freebutt, we could see She Keeps Bees at the Hope OR we could stay at home and be angry. I almost went with the angry part, but instead I went down to the Freebutt to see my Los Angeles compatriats for the first time since their somewhat-meh showing at Pershing Square in July. I’m going to blame their performance in July on their opener (worst band to ever haunt the planet, Little Red Radio) and the sound quality and the drunk bitches attempting to dance to the Soft Pack. Hi-larious.

Their gig at the Freebutt was their first that I’ve attended post release of their second album. I staunchly refer to ‘The Soft Pack’ as their second album. Mostly because I own the original 12″ that they released as the Muslims. It was an album, not an EP, not a digital release – a FUCKING amazing album! There was a healthy crowd to see them which pleased me to no end as I’ve enjoyed so much watching the Muslims go from playing Los Angeles constantly, to their name change, across multiple US tours, and now to the release of their sophomore album.

From the moment they kicked off with ‘Pull Out’, I could see how much they’d matured as a band. The new songs, off ‘The Soft Pack’, are a direct fulfillment of the promise they showed, even as far back as June 2008 – one of first times they played the Echo. They’ve kept their excellent rhythm section – David Lantzman’s bass is the screw that holds the ramshackle together, he’s the one that makes the songs remotely danceable; Brian Hill’s drums play tandem with Lantzman’s lines driving them forward, playing both sides – waiting for everything to just fall apart into one punky mess AND keeping it all together, keeping it solid. Matty McLoughlin’s guitar still needs as much forcing as it ever did – the guy can fucking play but it looks like it’s taking every bit of effort, every drop of sweat to get every note out of that damn guitar. And live, Matt Lampkin’s still got his most dangerous weapon – his voice. The ‘perpetual outsider commenting’ sound, that distant, devil-may-care quality is what draws me in – I can’t help but listen any time he opens his mouth.

So they’ve still got everything they’ve always had – what now? The song writing is better, for a start. For starters, a tune like ‘Mexico’ which may actually steal the show off the album could’ve never in a million years had a place on their first album. ‘C’mon’ is clearly destined to be a major crowd pleaser (my friend demanded we listen to it on repeat afterwards) and ‘Down On Loving’ is the best one to shout along to. It’s hard to pinpoint how exactly I know that something’s changed in the band – I don’t know if I’m too close, if I’ve seen them too many times and whether or not that means I’m one capable of seeing the change or not at all, but I know something’s different. The Soft Pack rock out, hard. That’s never going to change – well, I hope not – but something in their attitude says they’ve slowed down a little bit and taken more time to write the songs and be concerned with writing something more than say a ‘Nightlife’ (even though, honestly, its amazing and hilarious).

Matt Lampkin’s stage presence has also matured. Previously, when he has to ditch his guitar on stage for their perpetually amazing song, ‘Parasites’, he’d walk to the back side corner of the Echo and stand awkwardly not really knowing what to do. Now, he didn’t leave the front of the stage and kept our attention. Perhaps he’s not the most captivating front-man, but I doubt that would work for them, to have a front-man who steals the show, half the fun of the Soft Pack is working out which one to look at, which one’s working the hardest (my money’s always on McLoughlin, although Lantzman’s bass moves are amazing). Basically, if you buy yourself a ticket to see the Soft Pack, you’re in for an evening of fun and punky spirit and tunes to jump around and dance a little to – something that we don’t get enough in Brighton, something that I’d never turn down.
