from reverbnation–”highspire are a fairly beloved shoegaze band that formed almost 10 years ago in philadelphia by alex white and ej hagen. they only put out one full length album, the well received “your everything” in 2003-04. they are thought to have broken up. ”

.…..BUT THEY DIDNT! alex and ej went off to be in the The Morning After Girls
for awhile, but have returned to focus on making a new highspire album, and from what i can tell it’s going to be pretty cool.

Looks like the US leg Chapterhouse’s reunion tour will take place May 1-9th. One week? Assuming LA will get a show, I’m thinking, I don’t know…Henry Fonda? El Rey maybe. Can’t wait!

Holy SHIT, y’all, fly me to England for my birthday this year because Primal Scream are going to be playing SCREAMADELICA in its entirety at the London Olympia on November 27th. Why can’t I be there? This is my favorite one-woman bedroom dance party record. I wish I could be there. DAMN!

From Origami Vinyl’s blog:

“Over the last 2 months we have been working very closely with the great people over at the non-profit 826LA on helping them create a fundraiser for their free tutoring and workshop programs for children.

What came of it was a lyric writing workshop hosted by LA band The Submarines back in December, called Chickens in Love as coined by the kids. We asked some local musicians to donate time and come down to teach children the basics of lyric composition. Members of Kissing Cousins, Frankel, Hexham Heads, Nico Stai, and The Monolators split up the kids into 6 groups and each created a song of their own. You can see videos of most of them performing the songs at www.826la.com/chickensinlove. The site also allows you to vote for your favorite song/band by donating a dollar. Each dollar donated equals a vote. And a $30 pledge is Tax Deductible! The winning kids band gets the Gold Record and a rockin’ ice cream social!

We then reached out to LA based bands to cover these kids songs and compile them to be released on a Limited Edition LP releasing later this Spring. The artists were extremely generous and really put a ton of love into their kids’ song. The artists involved in this compilation are:

- Fiona Apple with Jon Brion and The Punch Brothers
- She & Him
- Cold War Kids
- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
- Tim & Eric
- The Happy Hollows
- Summer Darling
- Dum Dum Girls
- The Growlers
- Crystal Antlers
- The Pity Party
- The Submarines”

much more info at the website + info for a coinciding benefit show at the Echoplex on March 6th!

Words shamelessly stolen from p4k, photo shamelessly stolen from googleimages. It’s how we roll.

The L.A. indie label IAMSOUND puts on for its city. The label is teaming up with the British record store Pure Groove to launch the L.A. Collection, a series of split 7″ singles featuring local bands like Fool’s Gold, Local Natives, Dead Man’s Bones, Rainbow Arabia, Nosaj Thing, Pocahaunted, and Signals (ex-Mae Shi). Each 7″ will include exclusive material (except for Local Natives’ contribution), and the label will release one single every month through August.

The first single, out on February 16, is by We Are the World (it’s not a split.) It will be followed by the March release, a split between Moonrats and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes. The singles will be available from IAMSOUND’s website, as well as at L.A. record stores and at Pure Groove in the UK. Each single will include art by locals Ingrid Allen and Elisa Saether and typesetting by designer Aaron Rose.

New ‘queens’ of lo-fi: Dee Dee of the Dum Dum Girls, Bethany Constantino of Best Coast, the chickies in Pearl Harbor, and Nite Jewel got profiled in LA Weekly. It’s a pretty good article but the main problem that I have with it is that it fucking acts like the Smell is the greatest venue in LA and is helping all bands in LA make it. NO. FUCK YOU. The Smell is a shitty little brick building in an alley in downtown and its filled with animals who are 15 or however old (not 18, not drinking age) pushing each other. I hate the Smell.

Head on over to Buzzbands.la right now to read about and of course download the new Sky Parade single “I Should Be Coming Up”.

Producer Courtney Taylor-Taylor’s influence on this song, and presumably the rest of the forthcoming album Intoxicated, is really not subtle. “I Should Be Coming Up” could easily be nestled amongst the tracks of the latest Dandy Warhols album. And with Zia McCabe on keyboards, it’s more dance than drone. Not like what I’m used to from good ol’ Sky Parade, but I think it’s fun.

Sky Parade are playing Fitzgerald’s in Huntington Beach on February 13th with Gene Loves Jezebel.

One of the best labels in LA, IAMSOUND, got profiled in LA Weekly and its a really excellent article. They’re such a good label – and I swear I’m not saying that because I interned there. I wish I would have stayed longer but I know first hand how hard they work and how much they’re invested (and LOVE) the bands they work with and it really shows. I’m proud to have done a little work with them and only wish them good things in the future – I think its pretty plain to see that good things will continue coming to them. Go read this.

The Nonsound of IAMSOUND @ LA WEEKLY

Words shamelessly stolen from my friends at Drowned in Sound.

The first wave of bands have been announced for the ultra-intimate and Oxfordshire-based Wood Festival, which comes to you from the makers of Truck Festival. It’s all eco-friendly and that, and there’s only 800 tickets, too!

Anyway, the first batch of artists includes:

Tunng
Fionn Regan
Martin Simpson
Danny And The Champions Of The World
Frontier Ruckus
Ora Coogan
Trevor Moss & Hannah Lou
Dusty & The Dreaming Stars

WOOD – which takes place from 21-23 May in Brazier Park, Oxfordshire – claims to be Britain’s greenest festival, and who are we to argue? It’s powered entirely on renewable energy – solar power, wind power, and even includes a cycle-powered cinema and disco. As for toilet matters, gone are the plastic portaloos, and in are composting toilets, which sound a lot more pleasant. I’m thinking it’ll be kind of like an outhouse style set-up.

Other than the music, there are many workshops of varying themes and directions. It wouldn’t be worth calling it WOOD without one on woodcraft, though, as well as yoga, knitting, story-telling and the long-lost art of thatching.

Weekend tickets are priced at £70 for adults; a price which includes all camping as well as any workshops you may wish to attend throughout the weekend. Junior ticket prices (13-17) are £50, children under 12 get in free AND there’s also the opportunity to get a TRUCK+WOOD ticket all in one go. They go on sale on February 13.

There’s a junior ticket for ages 13-17 priced £50, children 12 & under can come along for free! Don’t forget you can also get a Supertrucker ticket – giving you access to both WOOD and it’s bigger brother TRUCK. TRUCK tickets go on sale 13th February.

Bob Dylan is set for an art exhibition at London’s Halcyon Gallery.

Beginning on February 13, the exhibition will feature work based on drawings from his ‘Drawn Blank Series’ from the 1990’s.

“I just draw what’s interesting to me, and then I paint it,” Dylan said about his art. “I’m not trying to make social comment or fulfil somebody’s vision and I can find subject matter anywhere. I guess in some way that comes out of the folk world that I came up in.”

The show will feature nearly 100 artworks from the musician, including the world premiere of 30 large paintings.

Dylan, who painted the cover of his 1970 album ‘Self Portrait’, has also included his drawings in the books Writings And Drawings and Lyrics 1962-1985.

After hosting alternative SXSW gigs in Austin for the last four years, Brooklyn-based DIY promoter Todd P is taking his act south of the border this March. The inaugural MtyMx All Ages Festival of Art and Music goes down March 20-22 in Monterrey, Mexico, and is set to feature up to 25 bands per day including Dan Deacon, Neon Indian, Washed Out, Thee Oh Sees, Pocahaunted, Indian Jewelry, Male Bonding, Best Fwends, and Banjo or Freakout, along with Mexican groups Los Fancy Free and Los Margaritos.

The all-day performances will take place in a 5,000-capacity “drive-in movie theater on the side of a mountain” called Autocinema Las Torres.

From Oasis’ official site:
Noel Gallagher will be playing two headline shows at this year’s Teenage Cancer Trust Benefit. The TCT Benefit Concert Series will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. He will perform on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th of March at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Noel told us, “Ten years ago I got a call from Roger Daltry asking me to join him for the first ever concert for Teenage Cancer Trust. It was a proud moment for me as a musician and since then I’ve been honoured to support this amazing charity.”

Other acts set to play this year include The Who, The Specials, Them Crooked Vultures and Arctic Monkeys.”

We here at NRBW have the biggest love-hate relationship with Mr. Alan McGee. He types EVERYTHING IN CAPS LOCK SO IT ALWAYS SEEMS LIKE HE’S YELLING AT US and he de-tagged himself from a picture of us on Facebook. Totally rude. BUT, as one of the founders of Creation Records he did help give rise to some of the best bands in the world and for that I am eternally grateful.

From Mojo: “The documentary has been put together by Document – the production company run by Danny O’Connor and Steve Lamacq – and will feature the likes of Noel Gallagher, Bobby Gillespie and, of course, McGee himself.

“It’s the story of the times,” says McGee. “Where it went right and where it went wrong. I expect it to last two days in the cinema and then do 500,000 DVDs!”

“PLEASE REPOST THIS: The band’s personal storage locker was broken into and Michael Been’s (Robert’s dad and our sound man) had his vintage equipment stolen. Items were 1954 Fender Esquire (Yellow with Black Pick Guard), 1968 Ampeg Scrolltop Fretless Bass, 1964 Black Fender Precision Bass and a 1968 Gretsch Country Gentleman Single Cutaway. Please repost this and help spread the word – these items were extremely personal and the band, Michael, crew and management are devastated over this brazen act. Thank you.”

Hunt this bastard down, BRMC army.

The 2010 White House Music Series begins on Wednesday, February 10th, when the President and First Lady will host “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement” – a concert celebrating Black History month. Participants include Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson, Seal, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Howard University Choir and others. Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah will serve as emcees for this concert which will feature songs from the Civil Rights Movement as well as readings from famous Civil Rights speeches and writings. The President will make opening remarks at this concert held in the East Room which will streamed live on http://www.whitehouse.gov starting at 5:15 p.m. ET.

“Dangerbird co-founder Peter Walker and his wife Brie Grousbeck were indeed the high bidders for Radiohead’s Haiti relief benefit concert in Los Angeles last night. They, along with the rest of the team at Dangerbird, stand behind the relief efforts to help a struggling nation in need and more so, back purpose beyond profit.”

Nice job, Dangerbird… not only are they paving the way for awesome bands like DARKER MY LOVE, but they’re rollin’ out the big bucks to support fellow human beings in need…. where the major labels at on this one? FAIL.

What do you guys think?

So Communion, if you live outside London or Brighton, is a monthly clubnight in both cities. Yeah, we know it originated in London, but I’ve never been to the London incarnation – I have been to the Brighton one twice and I know that it’s the best clubnight EVER. Don’t chalk that up to be NOT being a club person – or do, because I hate clubs yet I show up to this one. They consistently big up the best new acts in music, including King Charles and Lyrebirds recently…. And now they’re putting out a compilation featuring some of the better UK acts of the past couple of years…. I would recommend checking this shit out if you have no idea of the Communion scene…

Featuring: Johnny Flynn, Jay Jay Pistolet, Marcus Foster, Stokes William, Pete Roe, Broadcast 2000, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Jeremy Warmsley, Brendan Campbell, Alessi’s Ark, Mumfor & Sons, Matthew and the Atlas, Alan Pownall, Elena Tonra, Beans on Toast, Kurran and the Wolfnotes, Peggy Sue, Andrew Davie, and more…

HOLY SHIT Y’ALL! Look at them Growlers! They look stunning in this performance. I can’t wait for them to go on their US tour and show the entire country what we in LA have been taking for graned far too long! If this little performance is any indication, the Growlers are going to continue to grow and take their ridiculousness and perfect live show to a whole new level and I can’t wait to see them do it. I have so much invested personally in this band – I saw them like 9 times last year! God damn! But, please, I beg of you – go see them…. They have NEVER disappointed live, not once. They are worth every dollar you need to pay to see them, you will get it back in dividends, I promise. GO. GO. GO.
