This will be the 3rd or 4th time the Strange Boys have played the best venue in LA aka the Echo, and this will be the first time I miss it. Last time, in June, they had the Growlers opening for them in what we called the greatest lineup ever yet, somehow Liz has managed to almost outdo herself with Chain & The Gang and the awesome Neverever opening. This is absolutely not to be missed.

Hello, we’ve got a very pressing public service announcement for you. tUnE-yArDs are playing the Echo. On March 18th. If I had no where else to be, I swear to god nothing could keep me from seeing her live again. She was the first of probably less than five 10/10 gigs I will see this year. Do yourself a favor and see them opening up for Xiu-Xiu. You won’t regret it.
Damn, there is a lot of Good Stuff going on tomorrow!
Option #1:

(lol look at that cat)
Harlem at Spaceland. We’ve been listening to these guys a ton lately, their music is catchy as hell and a little bit sassy, aka right up our alley.
Damn, there’s a lot going on here. As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, we LUV Best Coast, Wavves are pretty cool, Andy Milonakis? Umm, weird, but okay. This one is 21+ but FREE with RSVP here: rsvp@mishkanyc.com
Lastly, if you feel like making the trek out to Orange County and if you like old fart bands–and I say this with affection, i LOVE old fart bands, The Damned and Buzzcocks are playing the Musink Tattoo Festival.
I am torn. TORN! I need a time turner a la Hermione Granger.
Well, not that sorry since you get the excellent combo of Harlem (our new NRBW favorites) and Best Coast! That’s a beautiful thing. Be careful. Check out our awesome chart I made in case you are travelling to SF. It will be very illuminating and helpful.

Fitz and the Tantrums are going for round 2 at Club Underground this Friday, February 19th. I know I probably sound like a broken record about these guys, but they are just that good. I was there last Friday and we had so much fun. The whole crowd–young and old alike–were shakin their shit to the soulful sassy jams, myself included, duh!. They’re at the top of their game so DO NOT MISS THEM, DORKS!

From Origami Vinyl’s blog:
“Over the last 2 months we have been working very closely with the great people over at the non-profit 826LA on helping them create a fundraiser for their free tutoring and workshop programs for children.
What came of it was a lyric writing workshop hosted by LA band The Submarines back in December, called Chickens in Love as coined by the kids. We asked some local musicians to donate time and come down to teach children the basics of lyric composition. Members of Kissing Cousins, Frankel, Hexham Heads, Nico Stai, and The Monolators split up the kids into 6 groups and each created a song of their own. You can see videos of most of them performing the songs at www.826la.com/chickensinlove. The site also allows you to vote for your favorite song/band by donating a dollar. Each dollar donated equals a vote. And a $30 pledge is Tax Deductible! The winning kids band gets the Gold Record and a rockin’ ice cream social!
We then reached out to LA based bands to cover these kids songs and compile them to be released on a Limited Edition LP releasing later this Spring. The artists were extremely generous and really put a ton of love into their kids’ song. The artists involved in this compilation are:
- Fiona Apple with Jon Brion and The Punch Brothers
- She & Him
- Cold War Kids
- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
- Tim & Eric
- The Happy Hollows
- Summer Darling
- Dum Dum Girls
- The Growlers
- Crystal Antlers
- The Pity Party
- The Submarines”
much more info at the website + info for a coinciding benefit show at the Echoplex on March 6th!
Ian Svenonius does it again. Recently got Down With Liberty…Up With Chains!–yeah, I’m late on this– and I am so, so impressed. Every song feels like a call to arms. Just listen for yourself. Do NOT miss them with The Strange Boys (!!!) at the Echo on February 26th.

Don’t forget to go see them with the Allah Las at Pehrspace this Friday, February 5th.
Today is a celebratory day! I get to see These New Puritans for the first time since June of 2008! Holy shit, that’s a looong time. But the second album is just an amazing coming-together of what they’ve always been able to do (ie: weirdness) but now people are taking it very seriously. I don’t feel in any way that TNPS are ‘pulling a Horrors’ because the first album was amazing. Regardless, I bring to you an awesome old mp3 from their trip to SXSW 2008 where I saw them like 4 times in 5 days, so rest assured I was present for this mp3 recording and ITS. AWESOME.
ALSO, Don’t forget These New Puritans are playing TONIGHT at AUDIO in Brighton!

Dirt Dress in Rosemead! I’m not sure where Rosemead is (I want to say….east) but Dirt Dress is pretty cool and 50 cents is cheap yo. I don’t like going to house shows because they make me feel old and cranky, but if that’s your thing…

If you like LA/OC’s current crop of sun-drenched garage rock–and we do, obviously–it would be a wise decision to find yourself at Pehrspace on February 5th. Surfy riffs and lo-fi mumbling abound.

Pehrspace is located at 325 Glendale Blvd in Echo Park.
Hey, I totally understand if you get all down on Valentines Day and spend all day listening to Morrissey and feeling sorry for yourself, because lord knows I’ve been there, but I have a much better idea for you this year. Quit moping and celebrate with us at Part Time Punks with one of my favorite LA bands The Meek and whatever MBV night entails. Kevin Shields will not be there, sorry, but the music will be good. The Meek don’t play shows very often so don’t miss this!! See you there!
A few months ago I posted about this band I had just discovered and fell in love with called Fitz and the Tantrums. I saw them live a few weeks later and I fell even harder. It was such a fun show that I believe it made it onto my Top 10 Shows of 2009. Natural born performers! I can definitely see some old sourpusses and debbie downers calling them contrived, that the soul throwback thing is tired, and hell maybe it is, I don’t know. All I know is The Echo was packed when they played and everybody was having fun and that’s really all that matters to me.
F and the T’s are playing two Fridays at Club Underground at The Echo next month, February 12th and 19th. Come to one, come to both, just COME, you will enjoy it.
