It’s a pretty special Sunday, whether you’re in America or abroad — Super Sunday to be exact. And it’s a great pleasure of mine to be posting Heavy Hawaii‘s newest, wooziest jam Super Bowl XXIX. This frost covered cut from their brand new 7″ via Art Fag Recordings sees our San Diego favorites hitting the high notes of Winter, the sparkling keyboards read like slowly falling snow. The guitars and the vocal harmonies remind me of the slow burning of ones fingers & toes walking into a warm house on a cold day. Wavering and weird, this is a great little jam. Whether or not this song is about football or about hitting a super (party) bowl twenty nine times, I can’t say but I hope everyone is doing both today. Let’s go Giants!

As for the song itself, besides being really great — is a different side to BroBro that I haven’t really seen before. So much less aggression, but like I said, still great — I’d say erring towards the good side of The Beets, but that’s just me. The double A-side I Drove For Miles Just To Hear About The Book Your Reading is more of a Brown Brogues patented non-blues garage-blues jam that I’m pretty sure I recognise from the live set — and it’s a ripper. Good to see Andy Auld (formerly of Teen Sheikhs, currently of label Sex is Disgusting) playing music again under the guise of Royal Limp, which is probably a fitting name for it all really. Been debating about posting this for a while, and in fact, whether or not I actually liked it at all — but after about 50 listens, it’s only 2 minutes 15 seconds of wonder, I’m firmly in the camp of liking. Similar everything he’s done, it’s super ramshackle, has twists and twinges of The Velvet Underground, and some vocal melodies that are splendiferous. On the first listen, don’t let yourself be turned off by the ‘held together with spit and paperclips’ vibe — I’m like, totally obsessed with this now.

Fresh off of my Top 10 LPs of 2011, and about a year since their previous (and excellent) debut, Denton TX’s Mind Spiders, are releasing their follow-up, Meltdown on February 21st via the great Dirtnap. Came across this kickass collab between Brown Brogues‘ Mark masquerading as King DJ and Manchester upstarts Cold Bones.
This demo is totally wild-eyed and rough around the edges, but the sinister guitar and vocals work really well with the mid-song freakouts, both making me come back for more. Don’t know much more about No Need For Names other than it rules, and that’s pretty much all you need to know.

On December 30th, I got to see the Growlers for the first time since they came to England and made my life worth continuing on — and my god, was it amazing. Despite the fact that their fanbase is way too hardcore in LA for my old, rickety bones — it was one of the best shows I’ve seen all year. In fact, they played a song (Sunset Girl) that is not only maybe my favorite of all time but had been forgotten by the band, um, forever. So that was really special. Their “2nd” LP that’s being finished up by the Black Keys man is going to be the record of 2012, so I thought I’d share this version of Kick the Habit of Dredd which is one of their most classic live jams that works perhaps even better in this Audiotree Session. Enjoy.

Our bro Matthew from Lost Lost Lost/The Pigeon Post turned us on to this new Manchester band, Base Ventura. Can’t say this too many times, but I love a bad/good band name, and this is a great one. Not too much known about these dudes, save a connection to Manchester Scenewipe, but the self-given description of “coming of age Mormon-stoner grind” sounds about right. Side of the Street chugs on, super sinisterly, with almost inaudibly reverbed vocals. The flippant bass and the cymbal-heavy drums really shove this track forward with a groove that makes me want to do really dark, weird dance moves when the psychedelic riffage comes in. This is never a good thing for anyone who happens to be in my vicinity, but I know that means it’s a really good track.
