It feels good to be back writing about my favorite kind of bands: Los Angeles/Orange County based ones. Allah-Las have been playing around LA forever, joining a death soup cult of ridiculously talented bands to raise up on out of the OC and go national including friends The Growlers, Audacity, The Entrance Band, Cosmonauts and Dirt Dress. If that doesn’t give you a clue about what they sound like, I will go ahead and tell you. ‘Catamaran‘ is a succulent little cut of psych-pop 60s surf that has a great groove, impeccable use of organ and winds up being strangely sexy. Seeing as I love all outdated dance moves, this one is perfect to do both The Swim & The Mashed Potato. If you’re into the Growlers and the Strange Boys, this is definitely for you.

If my last mix was meant to augment yr sense of weird June gloom, then this one is definitely the antithesis of June gloom. Enjoy.

01 Bass Drum of Death – Young Pros (Daytrotter Session)
02 Ty Segall – Sad Fuzz (Live in Aisle Five)
03 Wavves – TV Luv Song
04 Bazooka – Shame Take My Brain
05 Dear Eloise – 城堡
06 Allah Las – Catamaran
07 The Fabulous St. Knicholas Cage – Bloody Beach Blanket
08 Bitch Prefect – Marilyn Monroe
09 Bobby Chiz – Brooklyn Mouth
10 Gross Magic – Sweetest Touch
11 Icky Boyfriends – Nervous Guy
12 Dent May – Fun

So December 17th is a pretty sweet day. Not only are Thee Oh Sees playing for FREE with Nobunny at Thesex, this show is also happening. It’s like all our favorite bands from the OC are coming up to LA to play some weird place. We all know that we adore My Pet Saddle, and they’re bringing their buddies Jeffertitti’s Nile who we’re super stoked to see, Dahga Bloom who we enjoyed once over the summer, Allah Las who I’ve heard good things about; but mainly we’re stoked to see Matt Taylor of the Growlers’ side project The Pet Psychic. Check out the tunes on his myspace. They’re so goddamned good.

JEFFERTITTIS NILE, THE PET PSYCHIC, DAHGA BLOOM, MY PET SADDLE, AND ALLAH LAS ON FRIDAY DEC. 17TH AT THE HUSTLE HOUSE, 7240 COLDWATER CANYON AVENUE, NORTH HOLLYWOOD. 9:00PM/ $5/ ALL AGES.

The fabulous Dirt Dress are finally being rewarded and lifted out of the dreaded Smell scene, right up to where they belong: doing the November Monday Night Residency at Spaceland. The band, who are getting better and better by the second since we first saw them at Waved Out back in March are bringing some of their close friends in great bands with them. Check out all the lineups below, though, it’s safe to say they might be changed in the coming weeks, but it looks awesome and as always has doors at 8:30pm, is FREE for anyone 21+. So go:

November 1 :: with TRAPS PS / TIJUANA PANTHERS / RARE GROOVES
November 8 :: with GHOST PORN / SUMMER TWINS / SLIPPING INTO DARKNESS
November 15 :: with COSMONAUTS / AUDACITY / TOMORROW’S TULIPS
November 22 :: with ZIG ZAGS / THEM HILLS / WONDER WHEEL
November 29 :: with OH DARLING / CUM STAIN / ALLAH LAHS

If it was me, I’d make sure to go see Tijuana Panthers, then the Audacity/Tomorr’ws Tulips bill and maybe the 29th as well. Check out a cut from Dirt Dress below:

If you like LA/OC’s current crop of sun-drenched garage rock–and we do, obviously–it would be a wise decision to find yourself at Pehrspace on February 5th. Surfy riffs and lo-fi mumbling abound.
