Welcome to one of our first previews on SXSW. It struck me the other day that in a month and a half basically everyone who is anyone is going to be showing up in Austin, TX for the best week of the year. Here’s 7 artists that I am super looking forward to seeing in ATX and I hope you’ll check them out and see them live while you can….
Avi Buffalo (Los Angeles CA)
Avi Buffalo is the ringleader/wunderkind of an awesome band that has been making waves in Los Angeles for some time now. He’s going to bring his fresh, vital, youthful sound to Austin for the first time. Personally, I prefer the boy-girl interplay of Avi Buffalo to the much more hyped version that the xx are peddling around town, but Avi’s sound has a really simply melodic, classic beauty to it that got the attention of Sup Pop and a good portion of Los Angeles. This kid and his band of children (they just graduated HS for god sakes!) have it all – it’s going to be a fun ride watching where they take it.

This guy is just straight up SO. TALENTED. I mentioned before that I had seen him busking on the streets of Brighton (he’s a friend of a friend) and he told me that he was playing a little pub called the George and I was flat out stunned. He plays violin like an angel. His voice works so beautifully with his instrument – its a waltz of epic proportion, I love the interplays between plucking the violin and playing it normally – he just writes wonderful songs that inspire so much emotion and are so stunning they suck the speech right out of the room. I really think SXSW is going to propel this guy to be where he deserves. I don’t know if this will appeal to people who would normally read this blog – but I can only emphatically say GO SEE HIM PLAY. You won’t regret it.
Beans on Toast has been a weird-folk-hero around town for a looong time. Prior to the end of last year, he’d never properly released anything (he gave away his tracks!) and had basically 0 internet presence – the only contact he’d had with America, that I’m aware of anyway, was two visits to SXSW (2008 & 2009 respectively). And then he released his 50-track epic-folk-masterwork ‘Standing on a Chair’ and he’s all over the place with his friends (Josh Weller, Johnny Fynn, Mumford & Sons etc etc). Seeing Beans on Toast live is scuh a pleasure – he’s got such a warm ethos, a hilarious manner and just puts on a great show. He’s definitely not the most skilled musician, but what he lacks in technically skill is made up for with his adorable grin, his songs that draw you in with wittiness and rhyme, and the fact that he literally stands on a chair.
I shouldn’t have to pitch Johnny Flynn to anyone but here it goes. The man makes gorgeous folk tunes – like, really masterful ones. His debut ‘A Larum’ overflowed with beautiful gems with wise-beyond-his-25-years lyrics (sung in his mellow voice) floating over acoustic picking or backed by his country tinged band or over elegent strings. His full band shows, with the Sussex Wit, are more of a fun romp and stomp, but get ready to get your breath taken away when he performs acoustic – ‘The Wrote & The Writ’ is one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful songs I’ve heard in … well, ever. Don’t miss him.
Woven Bones is a band that I was surprised to not hear of until they opened for the Growlers. They specialize in fuzzy, primal, intense garage rock. Their live set is ramshackle in all the right places held together by Mo Tucker-esque simple, primal drums and really stong bass. Andy sings with a bit of a southern drawl but it all comes together in a really tight little package. Definitely a band to watch.
Happy Birthday (Burlington VT)
It’s hard to sell a band off of only one song – that is, unless the song is like, really really great. And fortuntely, for us AND for HB, ‘Girls FM’ (the first track off their forthcoming debut) is really fucking good. It’s got an interesting hook, it’s got King Tuff’s awesome caterwaul vocals and it’s catchy as fuck. With the members, especially King Tuff’s general excellence, it’s hard to imagine this debut not being one of my favorites of the year and making a giant splash at SXSW. If you like this, check out King Tuff’s old stuff – his only album ‘Is Dead’ is actually amazing and you’ll see this kid’s got a loooot to offer. Let’s hope he took some of his garage-blues sensibilities and infused them with Happy Birthday’s stuff, yeah?
Best Coast (Los Angeles CA)
Bethany Constantino = Best Coast. While I love that her moniker says everything that I feel about East vs. West, I also love what she’s doing with Bobb Bruno on drums. Detractors will surely say she’s cashing in on the overdone lo-fi business, but I say fuck them, this is sticky-sweet lo-fi beachy goodness. ‘When I’m With You’ is pop brilliance, and her voice really melds to whatever she’s conveying in each song – raning from darling to a little rough and on ‘The Sun Was High (So Was I), well, soaring. This bitch is encapsulating a part of California that I hold near and dear to me – and it sounds so good. Don’t know what they’re like live, but I’m certainly going to be finding out.
Avi Buffalo will see the light of day through Subpop on April 27, 2010.

10. Where’s Your Dirty Mind?
Avi Buffalo, the LB-born, LA-current wunderkind stopped by the Daytrotter HQ to record their first ever Daytrotter session. Here’s the gush-sesh that Daytrotter wrote down (that’s the first mistake) in case my glowing recommendations don’t cut it for ya:
The songs come across as sprawling and multi-dimensioned takes on puzzlement and cracking through the hardships of young and undeveloped love, while making the subject matter sound mature and interchangeable with the relationship misery of a couple twice or thrice as old. They find ways to sound like “Harvest” and “After The Gold Rush”-era Neil Young, with soft-spoken sentiments, cured with flurries of tempers ever so slightly held in check. It’s easy to relish the dreaminess of Avi Buffalo, but it’s just as easy to relish their many instances of nearly breaking something, of letting the frustrations of the content turn them red. It’s an exciting combination to keep all eyes on.
Download all the Avi Buffalo tracks below and keep your SXSW schedules open to see these guys:
Avi Buffalo – fresh off the announcement of their recent signing to Sub Pop Records and the release of their debut 7 inch single – will be heading to New York City for the first time EVER in January to support Final Fantasy at The Bowery Ballroom Jan 18th, 2010! The band will also headline their own show at Union Pool in Williamsburg on Jan 19th, 2010.
The band’s first 7 Inch single “What’s In It For?” b/w “Jessica” will be available next Tuesday Dec. 8th at select retailers in the U.S. & U.K. The limited edition release comes on red marbled vinyl. You can pre-order the 7 inch now at SubPop.com.
Avi Buffalo have been hard at work in the studio finishing new songs for their debut album with producer Aaron Embry (who has played with folks like Elliott Smith, Daniel Lanois, Emmylou Harris, Beth Orton, and a whole slew of others) which will be released by Sub Pop in the Spring of 2010.
The band are also confirmed to perform at this year’s SXSW festival which will take place in Austin, Texas March 17th-21st, 2010.
woohooo party with Avi Buffalo! Looking forward to SXSW
The super LA wunderkind Avi Buffalo is headlining at the Echo. You may remember I posted about this a couple of weeks ago when it was confirmed that he had in fact, signed to SubPop and was releasing “What’s It In For” on 7″ AT THE ECHO. Oh yeah. But he’s got a couple of support acts announced, with LA’s Aaron Embry & another Californian band, The Wildbunch.
By the by, LA fans of Avi Buffalo will be able to pick up the band’s first ever 7 inch at the Echo, and since it won’t be available in stores until December 8th, LA once again gets the best deal!
ALSO, if you want to swing by Origami Vinyl (yes, that amazing Record Store with EXCELLENT hours right next to Two Boots & Ye Olde Echo) and pre-order the 7″, you can basically get two tickets for the price of one. Yeah! I love when Origami and the Echo collaborate like that.
Pitchfork previewed the new track and here’s what they had to say: Avi Buffalo is the stage name of Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg of Long Beach, Calif., an 18-year-old guitarist and songwriter whose band has just signed to Sub Pop. They’ll be putting out their debut 7″ on the Seattle label in December. Here’s the A-side, “What’s in It For?”, a loose, jangly, twangy number with a sharp chorus hook that gently recalls labelmates like the Shins and Band of Horses.
Also newsworthy: Sub Pop recently posted a newly mastered version of “What’s In It For?” You can download it below! This is the version that will be on the 7 inch and yes it means any other versions of the track that I have posted are not the real deal version so please do yourself a favor and mark the other as unmastered or demos.
The superwunderkind Avi Buffalo has some fucking exciting news if I do say so myself. For the past 8 months he’s been playing all over the Spaceland Productions venues including a residency at the Echo and now he’s got some exciting news. I heard about this a while ago but wasn’t sure when it was going to be finalized but he’s going to be releasing a 7″ on SubPop Records! Woo. He’s also doing some more tour dates in California. Earlier in the year he played at Monolith Festival in Colorado. This kid is superbly talented and such an awesome fresh new face on the scene (he’s like, what, 18? Yep.) and I can’t wait to hear more from him. Here’s what he had to say below:
“Hello! This is Avi from Avi Buffalo, and I have some exciting news!
At our show at The Echo on November 5th, we will have our very first 7 INCH VINYL RECORD for sale, featuring 2 tracks from our upcoming record, “What’s in it For” and “Jessica.”
This 45 was made possible by our record label, which we are pleased to announce is Seattle’s own Sub Pop Records. I just got the test pressing for it yesterday and it sounds really good! You can pre-order the record from Sub Pop directly, or purchase it from us at our show at The Echo.

Last night was the last night of Avi Buffalo’s Tuesday nights in May residency at the Echo. I’d seen the 2nd show as well, and was really impressed but unfortunately, I allowed these bitchasses who talked over Avi’s really soft songs to ruin the evening for me. I was determined not to let that happen again – and while there was definitely a loud-talking-douchebag contingency at the Echo, Avi really shined last night. By virtue of the fact that he’s like 18 years old, his songs sound incredibly fresh and even whimsical. Some songs are more upbeat – powered by Rebecca’s short, driving keyboard lines; others rely on Avi’s voice, sometimes even daring to reach a low falsetto if such a thing exists. I really enjoyed his set and will be looking forward to seeing him again soon.

Here’s a couple of photos from last week’s Seasons show at Echo Curio.
Here’s some photos from Faraway Places’ Record Release party at the Echo last Wednesday. I really liked the Faraway Places. They were very California, and had this sort of Beach Boy’s feel to them in the structure and beachy/sunny quality to the songs. They backed that up with some really well placed light 60s-era-style psych riffs and small jams. It was pretty awesome.
And finally, some of the adorable Avi Buffalo from the second night of his residency. This kid is really cool and I’m so glad my co-worker Sam urged me to go. He’s super young, like practically out of high-school and plays this adorable, intelligent, quirky pop in-sync with a keyboardist with a beautiful voice and a stoic bassist.
