Um. Check out this video for Black Lips new song ‘Go Out & Get It’ which was filmed during Bruise Cruise this past weekend… and it’s AMAZING. Not only do I love the song, which people are saying is poppier and ‘sunnier’ than their previous stuff – but to me, they’ve always written really good pop songs so that’s kind of a cop out. I’m really excited to hear what June will bring to us in the form of their new LP, Arabia Mountain, if this is the first taster. Also, in the video they attempt cartwheels. Golden.
After our perennial favorites Black Lips get off the boat from Bruise Cruise and once again visit SXSW, they’ll go on yet another long US tour hitting up pretty much everywhere. This is presumably in support of their forthcoming album produced by Mark Ronson, and needless to say, I’m pretty fucking excited to hear it. Catch them live, also goes without saying:

There’s not much that I don’t love about SXSW. I revel in the pre-festival stressing, the insanity, the planning, the $2.50 Lonestars, the Frost Bank Building, street dogs at 1am, falling down dead of exhaustion after a long day, and so on and so forth. It’s the best week of my year and 2011 is going to be better than the previous three. Is It March Yet? is our preview of some of the bands we’ll be catching at this year’s festival for sure. We recommend you do so as well.
01 King Charles :: King Charles has been a face on the nu-folk scene due to his friendship with Mumford & Sons, but you shouldn’t hold it against him. When I saw him live, I was stunned. The dude shreds hard. His songs are textured and sprawling but completely catchy and cause great amounts of “this is rad head nodding”. He’s been signed by a major label and I forsee some kind of Vaccines like situation happening, but I would definitely not miss seeing him live. There’s some kind of charm to being flicked in the face with the sweat from his MASSIVE amounts of hair. He’ll tear the roof down, that’s for sure.

02 The Vaccines :: Okay, a lot has been said about the Vaccines, mainly by big huge magazines and shit, but I think I got the real low down on these dudes. They make sub-3-minute vaguely surf/garage inspired pop songs. They’re catchy as fuck, they capture a moment, they’re fun. Are they the saviors of British Guitar Music? Absolutely not. Having seen them twice, once with band at full-strength and once with Justin being sick, and I got to say — when they’re full force, they’re pretty good. That said, who knows where they’ll be in 6 weeks come SXSW after months of touring… I know what parties they’re going to play, and they’re going to be the goddamned talk of the town if they own it the way they did in Brighton in November.
03 Demon’s Claws :: I have been into Demon’s Claws for a while but at the turn of the year, I started really listening to them. I fell in love with their twangin’ brand of garage rock that is well, pretty concerned with the debauched pleasures in life. They remind me a lot of the energy and sound of Black Lips but has sort of a more-’authentic’-country vibe, but it’s really slight. I’m describing them terribly, but they rule. I’ve been jamming to “Fucked on K” for a while, but “You’ll Always Be My Friend” has pretty much taken over my life. Something tells me that live, they rip asses. I couldn’t really say, but as soon as I do know, I will let you know.
04 Black Lips :: I wasn’t sure whether I should include Black Lips in this list because it’s meant to more highlight smaller acts that I really think people should see, but I can’t deny that Black Lips put on one of the best live shows known to man and always have. Whether or not I have time to fit them into my schedule remains unknown for now, but I think that anybody who likes to jump around and have a good time and sing along to some of the best little garage gems and possibly get thrown on stage and into the drum kit (not that it happened to me or ANYTHING of the kind) will enjoy themselves thoroughly.
05 School Knights :: If you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you know we’re obsessed with School Knights. I think they’re incredibly phenomenal songwriters, and I think that they fucking slay asses live. Literally, your butt is going to get cut in half by these dudes. This duo, who’ve been together for less than 6 months (I spend longer on planes than they’ve been together basically), make what I would call pop-power-punk I guess if I had to but it sounds totally not rad and really annoying. So scratch that. They go balls out, to the wall — super loud songs with mesmerizing guitar work and plenty of reverb. I’m pretty sure it’s impossible not to like them, plus they’re some of the world’s funniest humans. Listen to them, you won’t regret it. Or better yet, come see them. I will tell you when and where to be.
Not really too impressed with Dickies SXSW 2k11 lineup… Not really sure how it all fits together but on Friday the 18th, our favorites The Black Lips will be playing at 11pm. NRBW favs The Fresh & Onlys will also be playing. RSVP via FilterMagazine.com/Dickies.
Okay, first things first: I’m not over saying 2k11, in fact, I love it more every time I say or type it. Second of all, my favorites, Black Lips are going on tour with Vivian Girls — who you know I think are Yawn City: Population 3. But I’m assuming they’re going to be really fun shows anyway. Except the fact that it’s missing West Coast dates (I’ll be in town at this time, too) and it’s missing other countries like the UK. I guess I’ll just wait. I did see them back in October. But if you’re in any of these towns, you know what to do. Ps. Why are Black Lips still playing the Loft in Dallas?

Watch more about Black Lips/Mark Ronson collaboration. And give it to us already, damnit. (I’ve edited about 500 words about how I adore them out of this post). You’re welcome.
I just spent the past 25 minutes of my life checking out this fucking radical video that Vice is putting out in three parts over the next two days, and then will air in it’s entirety on the 25th. It’s called New Garage Explosion: In Love With These Times and it’s basically most of my favorite bands talking about other bands that I really like. You get to hear about/from Jay Reatard, Black Lips, Thee Oh Sees, and Ty Segall (well, and many more, but I love them!). It’s focusing on the garage communities in San Francisco, Oakland, Detroit, New York, Memphis, Atlanta and Portland. Notably, and sadly, excluded is Los Angeles. This is absolutely worth 25 minutes of your time. Watch it.
Will I ever stop loving them?

We all know that sometimes (infrequently) I live abroad in England, but nothing will ever change my innate Californianess. However, I am forgetful and I have to fully disclose that I completely forgot to apply to get my expatriot ballot or whatever they call it, for the California state vote on November 2nd. That DOESN’T MEAN that I can’t haphazardly in a daze create a playlist based around my favorite Proposition, #19 and urge you to vote Yes on Prop 19 if you too have the greatest blessing of being born in or living in California. We also all know that I don’t try and give off the impression of intelligence when I write this blog (have you ever read it?) so I won’t give you my reasons behind wanting Prop 19 to pass, but just know that not only am I informed, but me/my friends/my state would benefit greatly from the passage of this Proposition. That alone is reason enough for you to vote yes, no? Find a mix of my 12 favorite (and totally not just whatever jumped out at me while hastily browsing iTunes) songs that are either 100% about weed or mention it/other drugs. ENJOY. Free Drugs ;-)
01 The Growlers – Drinkin’ The Juice Blues
02 Crusaders of Love – Good Time All The Time
03 Bob Dylan – Rainy Day Women #12 & #35
04 King Tuff – Sun Medallion
05 Black Lips – Drugs
06 Best Coast – The Sun Was High (So Was I)
07 Wavves – Weed Demon
08 The Strange Boys – Drugs Iggy Drugs
09 Black Lips – Dirty Hands
10 Adam Green – Drugs
11 Black Lips – Stoned
12 Ella Fitzgerald – When I Get Low, I Get High
Unbenkownst to most, probably, Dr. Martens are celebrating their 50th birthday. Just like anyone on their 50th birthday (my dad had a disco themed party, BTW), they’re celebrating by throwing a gig on the 29th of October at Village Underground in Shoreditch, London. The booze apparently will be cheap, and the tickets are FREE. All you have to do is visit the Dr. Marten’s facebook and enter your details HERE and you’ll know if you’ve won tickets by the 22nd of October. Good luck and see the full lineup below:
