Nu Rave Brain Wave’s utmost favorites, and uber obsession Black Lips are coming back into Los Angeles. It’s purported as more dates in support of their 2009 record, ‘200 Million Thousand’, but I have a feeling it’s just because they don’t know how to do anything but tour really. The last time they took a large break from touring, it was like 3 months, and two WHOLE weeks were devoted to recording the record. This time, unlike the last million times they’ve come to LA, they’ll be playing The Detroit Bar, The Glasshouse and The El Rey. Just kidding, those are the venues they always play because there are no good venues in Costa Mesa or Pomona for them to play and because they cannot play the Echoplex in LA anymore and they’re too small for the Fonda and the Fonda sucks.

January 20th – The Detroit Bar, Costa Mesa, CA
January 22nd – The Glasshouse, Pomona, CA
January 23rd – The El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles, CA

Tickets for Detroit Bar are on sale and will probably go quickest, but there will be a special presale for the El Rey show on Thursday, October 5th at 10:00am. If you miss out, you can get tickets to see the Black Lips at the El Rey Theatre on Friday, October 6th at 10:00am and at 12:00pm noon for the Glass House show.

Fuck, I hope they tour the UK again really soon, I can’t fucking stand missing them 6 times in the course of 6 months, it’s completely unacceptable by my standards.

The bearded gentleman you see above is Stephen McBean of Black Mountain and side project Pink Mountaintops. Pink Mountaintops’ newest album Outside Love has been on heavy rotation for me for awhile now; simply put, it’s beautiful. The grittiness of the previous albums is stripped away to let those huge harmonies shine through. On record, songs like “Axis: Thrones of Love”, title track “Outside Love”, and “Execution” sound nearly symphonic. But on Tuesday evening, even through my gin-soaked haze, I could tell that lush sound just didn’t translate to the stage. This is probably not at the fault of either the band or the venue, but something just seemed a bit off. Maybe it was simply because they lacked the man/woman-power; after all, there are 21 musicians credited on their album and there could not have been more than 7 on stage. So although it was not the ethereal musical experience I was hoping for, Pink Mountaintops still put on an impressive performance to a packed Echo. Xu Xu Fang opened the show with the sparest of their many incarnations, numbering only 6 members as opposed to their usual 10 or 11. In true Fang fashion, the stage was foggy, the music dark and atmospheric. I still can’t completely pin down their musical style or easily pigeonhole them into a genre or sub-genre or sub-sub-genre, and something tells me they’d like that. I caught a few songs from The Pack A.D. and I will just echo the words of somebody else who was present: “They sound like a female Restavrant”. Not a bad thing by any means, but perhaps a bit ill-fitting in this lineup. But all in all, a great Tuesday night at The Echo.

“In Los Angeles during the mid-’60s, music was everywhere – from the garages of Orange County, to the dingbat apartments of the San Fernando Valley, to the bungalows of Laurel Canyon. But without a doubt, the epicenter of the music scene was the Sunset Strip, where “freaks” filled the rock clubs lining the famed Hollywood thoroughfare. Rhino continues the storied Nuggets tradition with a four-disc boxed set that mines the city’s rich musical history for unsung gems. WHERE THE ACTION IS! LOS ANGELES NUGGETS 1965-1968 will be available September 22 from Rhino Records for a suggested list price of $64.98.”

And our pals at Amoeba are celebrating this awesome release with in-store performances by Jackie DeShannon, Keith Allison, Danny Hutton , The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, The Standells, and P.F. Sloan. This all kicks off at 6pm tomorrow, September 22nd. Pre-order through amoeba.com for cool swag like t-shirts and signed posters too!

Very very cool. I would definitely pick this up if you have the cash. About time LA’s rich music scene of the 60s got some credit!

“This Sunday LA’s Fool’s Gold joins us for Summer Camp. This crew has been tearing up LA lately and every time I ask for band suggestions, their name comes up. They’ll be playing with our friends and super showpeople Spider Problem and a special guest TBA.”

So maybe y’all blog readers don’t know, but tomorrow is going to be my last day in America for a while. I’m going on to Brighton, and as excited as I am to be starting a new chapter of my life…. My life in LA is pretty damn great, so I’m really fucking sad to be leaving. I had an excellent internship, I have a wonderful blog with my BFF Colette, and I get to go to all the best shows. So it’s a very bittersweet move for me…. This is why I compiled an amazing Bob Dylan playlist that is at once comforting, haunting and wistful. And I decided to share it with you lot.

Corrina Corrina / The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan Outtakes
Boots of Spanish Leather /The Times They Are A-Changin

Klaxons11

That’s right… Klaxons and Arctic Monkeys at the Hollywood Palladium on September 15th, or at the Casbah in San Diego on the 14th if you’re so inclined. As we know, Klaxons have sort of fallen off the radar since they nu-raved their way into our hearts in 2007; supposedly they wrote an album that their label flat-out rejected and had to start over completely. I’ll be interested to see what they’ve been doing in the last two years.

Oh yeah Arctic Monkeys will be playing new stuff too I guess.

Not technically music related, but he named his cat Morrissey so he automatically has a special place at NRBW.

So if you’re like me, and missed him at SXSW since he was holed up in the 21+ British Music Embassy, here’s your chance! He’ll be performing 3 nights at the Paul Gleason Theater in Hollywood. The dates are:

April 5th
April 6th
April 12th (see you at this one!)

Tickets are available now for $15 (triple this price if going through Ticketmaster)

Let’s all collectively pray for a Noel Fielding and/or Moz guest appearance, please.
