Oh god, how is it the end of October already? That is terrifying. Literally. This month has been pretty rad though – I’ve discovered a lot of great tunes this month, and I give many props to the people who have been funnelling it into my ears. Next month’s gonna be pretty unreal, but October has done me pretty good. Also of note: I’ve spent the entire month with a massive bruise on my arm. So, now that you have that absolutely retarded information, check out the mixtape below.

Also, PS. Isn’t that photo the best thing ever? A pug and a French Bulldog together? It’s like my dream life.

02 Heavy Hawaii – Philly Games
03 Shimmering Stars – I’m Gonna Try

mp3 | Nu Rave Brain Wave October 2010 Mix

Y’all… I can’t believe I’m making this post, but um, three years ago today Colette and I made our first blog posts! A little bit of NRBW history for you — we had spent all summer of 2007 basically travelling the world mocking bands and decided we needed an online outlet so our buddies could appreciate our humor, which is always on point – of course. We chose the name Nu Rave Brain Wave because, at the time, Nu Rave was totally the witch-house of it’s era and we would make jokes when we had the exact same thoughts about music and say it was a Nu Rave Brain Wave between us. Dubious beginnings nonwithstanding, I happen to love this blog and am pretty pleased and surprised how far we’ve come (in looks, in music taste, and in profiting off this bitch) in the past 3 years. Each year has been better musically, and I know 2011 is going to top the ridiculously crazy amazingness that 2010 has brought. See you every day until next October 22nd. Find my top 5 most played songs recently below to celebrate:

I got my full dose of New Jersey hate when I was in New York last month, but NJ natives Navajo Bixby are kind of giving me a reason to champion that smelly little state. The latest offering from the band, ‘Down Under’, is their first new release in quite a while but the wait was definitely worth it. The song is a fucking summer jam that’s arrived too late – warm and undeniably beachy loops are the undercurrent for the summer/reverb soaked guitar. It’s rooted in 50s and 60s pop, but sounds ridiculously fresh and there’s something about the repitition that is really sweet and not annoying. Loving this Judd Hower’s kind of amorous vocals, too. Highly recommended.
