Beady Eye “Bring the Light”

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Okay, okay, it’s Liam Gallagher. Although he’s number two in my Top Two Gallaghers, I can’t bring myself to not enjoy this a little. But it also confirms what everybody already knew, that Noel was the true creative force behind Oasis and Liam was the, well, Liam had that voice. Somebody commented that this is like watered-down Riot City Blues-era Primal Scream and I can’t entirely disagree with that. I’m frustrated and I want Oasis back. I’m still in the grieving process and I think I’ve been stuck in the “anger” stage for awhile. Like, fuck you guys. You split up to create songs like THIS? After all we’ve done for you? I’m going back to bed.

mp3 :: oasis – boy with the blues + video

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Damn, what kind of Oasis superfan am I? I thought I had all my Oasis b-sides by now, but this one slipped through the cracks until just a few minutes ago. “Boy With the Blues” was written by Liam in 2005 and was considered for both Don’t Believe the Truth and Dig Out Your Soul, but somehow never made the cut for either album. Why the hell not?! This gives me chills, especially the gospel choir refrain at the end. Goddamn I miss Oasis.

noel gallagher headlining teenage cancer trust benefit

Monday, February 1st, 2010

From Oasis’ official site:
Noel Gallagher will be playing two headline shows at this year’s Teenage Cancer Trust Benefit. The TCT Benefit Concert Series will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. He will perform on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th of March at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Noel told us, “Ten years ago I got a call from Roger Daltry asking me to join him for the first ever concert for Teenage Cancer Trust. It was a proud moment for me as a musician and since then I’ve been honoured to support this amazing charity.”

Other acts set to play this year include The Who, The Specials, Them Crooked Vultures and Arctic Monkeys.”

Creation Records “Upside Down” documentary next month!

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

We here at NRBW have the biggest love-hate relationship with Mr. Alan McGee. He types EVERYTHING IN CAPS LOCK SO IT ALWAYS SEEMS LIKE HE’S YELLING AT US and he de-tagged himself from a picture of us on Facebook. Totally rude. BUT, as one of the founders of Creation Records he did help give rise to some of the best bands in the world and for that I am eternally grateful.

From Mojo: “The documentary has been put together by Document – the production company run by Danny O’Connor and Steve Lamacq – and will feature the likes of Noel Gallagher, Bobby Gillespie and, of course, McGee himself.

“It’s the story of the times,” says McGee. “Where it went right and where it went wrong. I expect it to last two days in the cinema and then do 500,000 DVDs!”

“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” – Noel Gallagher

A biased Oasis album review

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Dig Out Your Soul is HERE (well…leaked on the internet), and as head of the Oasis department of Nu Rave Brain Wave, it’s my pleasure to bring you my very biased song-by-song review.

1. Bag It Up: An awesome, sludgy guitar riff and raspy vocals from Liam. Beautiful. A powerful song to start out the album. Very guitar-driven, which sets the tone for the rest of the record.

2. The Turning: One of my two favorite songs on DOYS. When I heard the piano part, the first thing I thought was “SUPERGRASS!” The second thing I thought was that this is going to sound so cool live. The chorus has that BIG, epic sound that Oasis does best, the sound that can fill the Hollywood Bowl and bring you to tears. Not speaking from experience or anything..

3. Waiting For the Rapture:Noel sings on this one, and although I prefer Liam’s voice I also enjoy variety. This song has a great rhythm and more heavy, chugging guitars. You’ll find yourself automatically bobbing your head along 3 seconds in. very cool

4. The Shock of the Lightning: I’m glad I had this to play on repeat to tide me over until the entire album leaked, but it’s definitely not the most interesting song on the album. A tiny bit repetitive. Regardless, it’s fantastic. Not much more to say.

5. I’m Outta Time: Starts off with a very Beatles-esque guitar riff, and I’ve never bought into the “Oasis is a bad Beatles ripoff” theory. However, Liam wrote this one so it’s not at all surprising! This is a slower, lighter song and sounds like it could’ve been on Be Here Now. I love how the piano picks up toward the end of the song and leads it out. It’s really beautiful.

6. (Get Off Your) High Horse Lady: Hand-claps as a backing beat, vocal distortion and occasional cowbell. Definitely a surprising turn and I love that they left their comfort zone a little bit. Not really a chorus to speak of but again, very different in a good way.

7. Falling Down: This is probably my other favorite which is surprising since Noel sings it. But his voice is so expressive during the chorus and the melancholy lyrics over the rich-sounding piano and unique rhythm just makes for such a gorgeous song. Absolutely heartbreaking!! It reminds me a bit of “Part of the Queue” which was my favorite song on Don’t Believe The Truth.

8. To Be Where There’s Life: Gem Archer wrote this one and it’s totally psychedelic and spacey, with gratuitous sitar WHICH I LOVE. “Hypnotic” is probably the best word to describe the song. Again, I cannot wait to see what they do with this live. This is so cool and LSD-laden and a whole new direction for Oasis. Hopefully Gem will continue to get some musical input because I just love this.

9. Ain’t Got Nothin’: A defiant little tune written by Liam. I love the pounding drums during the verse and that you can practically hear him sneering at you, but I’m not completely crazy about the chorus.

10. The Nature of Reality: Andy Bell wrote this one, and like the first few songs on the album its got a muddy guitar riff and is very heavy on the distortion. The last minute or so of the song is all feedback, sleighbells and tambourine. pretty coolllllll

11. Solider On: Musically, the final song on the album sounds quite similar to “666 Conducer” by BRMC, which is fine by me. My favorite band being influenced by my other favorite band is pretty sweet. However, the chorus is pretty different and there is an echo effect going on that I dig. I think this is the perfect song to end the album. It’s powerful and anthemic and the way it just drones and fades out with “solider on” repeated over and over is perfect.

Over all, I give “Dig Out Your Soul” a….
