The amalgamation of my favorite band + two of my other two favorite people/bands (ie: Black Lips, King Khan & BBQ/Mark Sultan) have been playing some small shows here and there inbetween their respectively crazy touring schedules. They did a show at CMJ and Brooklyn Vegan put up a nice review that I felt like sharing with you, with photos added. Then maybe some amazing videos that are killing me, and then maybe, possibly some of my thoughts on their album:

While the previous two bands might have strived to achieve an organic quality to their electronic landscapes, The Almighty Defenders had enough of it to start a West Village co-op. Perhaps a little too much; at times their choir-robe sporting performance came off as mildly contrived attempts at irreverently performed traditional gospel-tinged rock sprouting out of the soil. Their dynamism as performers couldn’t be discounted however, as they stirred the crowd into a frenzy with a nearly hour long drunken sermon of soulful garage bliss.

This indie “supergroup” has stumbled on a unique dynamic; coupling the best elements of the ultimate divisiveness that is the Black Lips’ style – an undying energy and a solid rhythm section – with the grandiose stage presence and musical abilities of King Khan and his long time partner Marc Sultan (BBQ Show). To all that add the Kentucky-fried-church sing-a-long, ebulliently spilling from the stage. Songs full of cheering, Bible-quoting, and plucky reverb-heavy guitar lines with lots of claps and tambourine sparkle defined their whole performance for the most part. Not that the crowd at Roots Studios seemed to mind; if anything, they might have seen the light.

The baptismal experience was nearly complete with the addition of a “communion ceremony,” where guzzles from a Jameson whiskey bottle were administered to parishioners, that is audience members in the front row, poured with a steadfast hand by Black Lips member Cole Alexander.

It provided a fitting image for a show that might have sparked the first born-again revival in Williamsburg’s ever-growing cultural history. Praise the lord and pass the ammunition.

I’m Coming Home

Bow Down & Die

The Almighty Defenders – Self Titled Debut

So the very premise of The Almighty Defenders in all likelihood is going to split the world’s constituents into two categories. The first will probably be pissing themselves thinking the amount of talent contained in the members: King Khan himself, the BBQ aka Mark Sultan, and the entirety of the Black Lips. It’s like a match made in a disgusting Berlin garage. Oh wait… The second group will probably be rolling their eyes in disgust that the kings of the current garage revival all got together after the purported international incident where Black Lips got kicked out of India and recorded and album. I happen to be of the first persuasion. By that I mean, I was waiting on the edge of my seat until this album got released, and finally it’s here.

So the story goes that Black Lips went to India, got their cocks out and got kicked out of the country under threat of jail time. They were not heard from for a few days until “word” got back to Vice that they were holed up with King Khan and BBQ in a studio in Berlin, where Khan lives with the Shrines. Whether or not that whole incident was a plea for more publicity matters not, for the Almighty Defenders came out of it – a pairing which was made in Heaven (yes, the nightclub in London) and which many people were clamoring for long before Black Lips had even made a name for themselves. So it is with great pleasure and a fair amount of liquor, weed, and dirt under their fingernails that King Khan, BBQ and the Black Lips bring to you the Almighty Defenders debut.

‘Bow Down and Die’, although one of the first tracks released to promote this album, never gets old. It’s straight up hand clapping gospel Sunday morning tune with Cole’s dirty vocals and enough “harmonizing” to make it seem like a cat dying, this tune is grade A. But more importantly, I love how each song in its own way showcases the amazing things about each member of the band – things that may not necessarily get such a showcasing whilst they play in their day job bands. ‘Cone of Light’ showcases the elements that BBQ (Mark Sultan), Joe (Black Lips), and Ian (Black Lips) do quite well respectively: BBQ belts it out, making him currently the only singer in garage rock who can actually fucking sing; Joe is a machine behind the drums, urgent as ever; and Ian is rock solid on guitar, sneaking up on you making you think he’s a messy guitarist but actually working some type of magic. The Ghost With The Most is swampy sounding, with Jared getting to show his vocal muscles with a fair amount of reverb, “It takes a wicked man to blindly lead the blind”, sounds most like a Black Lips song probably due to Ian’s most underappreciated guitar line taking the back seat to Jared’s wailing. I’m Coming Home unites all their talents into a ‘love tune’ about a man coming home from war, syrupy bass line drives the tune forward with Cole, Joe, King Khan and BBQ taking scratchy vocal duties over a fairly blues guitar line. Gospel is not forgotten with everyone shouting, “I’m coming home, oh yeah!”

But make no mistake, this record is not polished. It’s cohesive in its almost otherworldly, saintly in a dirty way, gospel garage heavenly feel, but it’s still a product of those who make up the band. And what I mean by that is that these men are ridiculous, crazy, and like to fuck around and this record does have a few WTFuck moments, as we all knew it would. ‘Death Cult Soup ‘N Salad’ consists solely of weird noises (most I’m assuming made by Cole and Joe) over some pretty heavy, and by heavy I mean distorted and rudimentary, riffing that together make up this delectably titled song. ‘The Great Defender’…. All I can assume about this song is that crack was a main component in it’s creation.

So what remains to be seen is whether or not the material will play out live. The group has played less than a handful of shows, including the Sell Out Festival, oh excuse me, Scion Garage Fest in Portland. But with the busy touring schedule each band keeps, with Khan and BBQ touring America in the fall, Black Lips touring the world for ever and ever, Mark Sultan coming out with a new album and the Shrines supposedly coming out with a new album soon – it doesn’t look good for the Defenders live show, but performances like the aforementioned CMJ prove that I may not know what the fuck I’m talking about. ‘Mon the Almighty Defenders world tour of 2010.

I am going to ignore the fact that this is a complete corporate sell out for all the bands involved, but hey, Jay/Black Lips/King Khan are a little older now, they don’t shit and spit (well…) on each other that much more these days, and HEY, it can’t be cheap paying for an apartment that you never live in, but regardless, the best bands in the world will be playing the free Scion Garage Fest, coming to Portland, Oregon on October 17.

The festival will go down at four venues: Satyricon, Berbati’s Pan, Someday Lounge, and Dante’s. Roky Erickson, the former 13th Floor Elevators frontman and general all-around psych-rock O.G., will headline. The bill also includes Black Lips, Jay Reatard, the King Khan and BBQ Show, the Almighty Defenders (the supergroup featuring the Black Lips, King Khan, and Mark Sultan), the Dirtbombs, the Deadly Snakes (reunited!), Simply Saucer, the Dutchess and the Duke, Harlem, Box Elders, the Beets, Fresh & Onlys, the Coathangers, and many others.

In case you don’t keep up on the Black Lips every move, you know you’ve come to the right blog to hear about it all. So this weekend they played Pitchfork Festival, and none other than Pitchfork interviewed them about some things. For the tl;dr crowd, I have bolded the excellent parts.

Interview: Black Lips | [by Zach Kelly]

Pitchfork: So what’s new with you guys?

Cole Alexander: We got a new record coming out as the Almighty Defenders.

Pitchfork: You hopped over from India, and then you were hanging out in Berlin with King Khan, right? And that’s kind of how it came to fruition?

Jared Swilley: Well it’s freezing cold in Berlin, very inhospitable to humans, especially humans from Georgia. So we didn’t go outside– we were just gonna record a Black Lips EP, and then it just turned into, like, they [King Khan and Mark Sultan] had songs and we just started just hanging out. King Khan’s kids are on it. Just really spur of the moment.

Pitchfork: He fucking killed here last year. You guys have to live up to that.

JS: I saw that video; he burned money. We’re gonna burn hair.

Pitchfork: Sounds good.

CA: It’s a bad smell.

Pitchfork: Well, there have been a lot of bad smells at this festival so far.

Joe Bradley: It’s only gonna get worse.

Pitchfork: I talked to Wavves earlier today…

JB: Did he break down in tears?

Pitchfork: He did not break down in tears…When is your imminent breakdown?

CA: We’ve had it multiple times.

JS: We’ve had it a few times but never in the public eye.

CA: We make an art of breaking down.

Pitchfork: Well the India thing was pretty highly publicized…

ISP: Well my girlfriend is from India and I was trying to impress her parents. I fell real short. We had a real nice record, we got kicked out of India and went to Berlin, it was really cold, we were stuck indoors and we recorded an Almighty Defenders record. And we’re all real proud of it. It’s coming out in September.

Okay, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this is probably gonna be my pick for album of the year…

So, due to my own ineptitude in the realm of Wordpress themes and HTML in general, I can’t figure out how to make a “view older entries” link come on this page anywhere…. Props to Alison for alerting me to this fact, but also if anyone wants to help me out – feel free. Anyway, so I’m doing a roundup of some of my favorite and best mp3s that I’ve given away lately WITH some added commentary. All for free.

Also this happens to be my 20th Jamie T post, and due to the fact that I listen to this MF every single day and none of his songs ever get old and I only ever discover new things, different layers, hidden meanings and utter brilliance when I listen to his music… I’m giving away some of his old demos that are really excellent and it’s a shame that they fell by the wayside….

Feels Like Summer – Johnny Foreigner – I can’t listen to JoFo every day because they’re kind of grating in a great way, but this song is so fun. It’s really exuberant and excellent to shout along to or bust your speakers for.

Bow Down & Die – The Almighty Defenders – This song is so wonderful. The first time I ever heard it, I had extreme deja vu so strongly, like I have never felt before, because that is how organic sounding it is. Taking all the strengths and none of the weaknesses of their respective bands, Black Lips, King Khan and The BBQ are the Almighty Defenders. The best way that I can describe this song is the kind of gospel, airy, Southern song that you might sing at about 9:45 in the morning, after having seen a crazy, sweaty, intense gig, partied until 6am, dozed off until 9:42 and then gathered around outside on a day-bed to lay around and avoid a hangover.

2079264890_20b34495d9_oHasabe – Black Lips – This ultra rare Black Lips song’s 10 second beginning had me doubting whether or not this was real, and then the skuzzy riff comes in and then Cole Alexander comes in on his microphone-made-out-of-a-tin-can, recorded-in-an-underground-treehouse vocals and you know it’s signature Black Lips. This song is so good, I can’t believe nothing ever came of it and I’m shocked that it was never widely released. This is a side of Black Lips that I really like, it’s really raw, and the lyrics….meh, it’s Black Lips – sometimes brilliant (on accident) but always relatable (Punk Slime, anyone?) but when Cole shouts “US of A” it really makes me proud to be American, you know?

Jack The Ripper – Black Lips – I don’t need to sell anyone a copy of Screaming Lord Hutch’s Jack the Ripper, but I will. It’s not like the Horrors version which is very polished even if they wern’t at the time. This is live and as scuzzy and dark as Black Lips can be. Basically it’s a marriage made in a garage.

Fox News – Jamie T – This is a different side of Jamie that I really like, and I mean his stripped down song. I honestly think he is a great lyricist, and this song really showcases it… hence: “Well pigs fucking fly, and it ain’t about oil, and Fox News has always been fair and balanced.”

NWA (Not Without Apology) – Jamie T – Not Without Apology aka NWA I think may be one of Jamie T’s least accessible songs. It’s brash and harsh and the mix of the guitar is just a bit too dominant. How can I sell you a song by saying it’s one of his worst songs, well, I don’t know, but it’s actually not his “worst song” it’s just not as polished as the rest of the songs that seem to flow out of Jamie so easily. He makes good use again of the strings – something I wish he would continue on more songs (as he utilizes in On Holiday, below) but the guitar is really off-putting until about 1:44 where the song really comes together. The guitar riff has been stuck in my head for days and I think it’s pretty excellent. This has been the most jingle-jangled typing of words about a song maybe ever, but I think this is fitting. I will put it to you this way, if I heard this song I’d say this MF has a LOT of potential and can’t seem to stop listening to this song.

On Holiday – Jamie T – I know this is embarassing, but originally I didn’t like this song because it doesn’t have the most catchy beginning like most of Jamie T’s songs that grab you immediately (with loud noises, shouting, or wonky keyboards) but this isn’t like most of Jamie’s other songs. Unlike most of Panic Prevention (rather like Brand New Bass Guitar and Back in The Game), this song is really low key, but it’s not acoustic. It’s basically Jamie displaying his mastery of flow, most of the song is him “singing” (aka rapping/speaking/spitting) over violins and it’s incredible. This song is really great to zone out to – and I don’t mean that in a weird way but I always find myself just being grabbed by his timing, and rocked like a baby while I try to figure out just what he is saying. This song is really amazing, though, and it’s just Jamie T making another great song, it’s in his blood.

Do You Have The Time – Jamie T – If you’ve ever heard Amy Winehouse’s ‘Ska EP’ this is in the same “ska” vein. It’s a really fun song. That’s all.

And finally, two new ones:

Cutting Out The Bad – Copy Haho – Lighter than Dananananaykroyd, less twee than Los Campesinos! and less geeky than Bombay Bicycle Club is probably the best way I can describe these guys. Usually I hate likening bands to other bands, especially when all the bands are buddies, but nothing really jumped out at me to say about this track other than I’ve been listening to it on repeat for like a day and I really like it. Copy Haho’s whole EP is excellent and I really recommend checking it out.

Mr. Understanding – Let’s Wrestle – I think this is a cover of Pete and the Pirates. I love it. Let’s Wrestle are something special methinks, but I’m going to hold off on elaborating because I’m planning a big post. Let’s just say that they have that same distant observer vocals going on, and I’m obsessed.

If you forgot the post where I introduced the ALMIGHTY DEFENDERS, log off this website right now. Just kidding. But seriously, this is going to be one of the most incredible collaborations probably of all humanity. It’s BLACK LIPS and KING KHAN & THE BBQ. Yes, you heard me right. Black Lips AND King Khan. Together. This is the album that the guys made after Black Lips were forced to flee from India, so they ended up in Berlin recording with Khan. Wow.

They’ve got one song off the album up on myspace and have got their first ‘official’ (as it was put) show in TORONTO. (Had it been even marginally closer… I might have gone….)

From the Black Lips Blog… I fixed any and all grammatical and spelling errors and bolded what you need to know. Think of it as Black Lips + King Khan & the BBQ = The Defenders. The Defenders + studio time = magnum opus.

So, as most of you now know we had to get the hell out of India, and find a safe have here in Berlin. It was too bad we couldn’t finish the tour, but we’re gonna make the best of it, and record an entire new album. It’s us and King Khan and BBQ joining forces as the Defenders. We started yesterday at Moon studios, and have already completed 4 songs. Once we’re done we’ll be giving the album away for free, and maybe do a limited vinyl pressing. I guess India wasn’t ready, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise because we are gonna make our magnum opus.
