favorite albums of the aughties :: the warlock’s bobby hecksher

(this is the first thing that came up when i google-imaged Warlocks)
I’m sorry but the term aughties makes me cringe, I wish we as a collective society could have picked something better. But I guess that’s beside the point.
Anyway, mad mad mad mad mad props to Bobby for mentioning The Growlers–he compared Brooks’ voice to a “wrecked pirate ship” and I have to say that is a perfect analysis. Also props for hating on Radiohead (a little).
top 5 albums of 2009 1/2 :: colette has her say

5. Kasabian – West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum – Kasabian are a solid band, no doubt about it. They should be a lot bigger than they are, but regardless West Ryder… tends to stay true to the Kasabian formula, fusing all the best elements of Madchester, electronica, and even a bit of hip-hop. The standout track on this album is “Fire”, which starts out lazily and evokes images of a dusty high noon Wild West showdown, and then bursts into a hip-shaking dance number without warning. A terrific album.

4. Sonic Youth – The Eternal – If somebody played me this album and told me it was released in 1993, I wouldn’t have doubted it. This is the signature Sonic Youth sound that we all know and love them for; the detached, noisy guitar. Kim’s abrasive howl and Thurston’s disaffected, matter of fact lyrical delivery, together in perfect harmony. Check out “Anti-Orgasm” and “Antenna”.
3. The Vandelles – Del Black Aloha – I don’t know why The Vandelles don’t just move to California already. Their particular brand of shoegaze relies heavily on surf rock guitar and percussion, and with song titles such as “Blue LA Strip”, and “California Killer” one may wonder what’s keeping them in Brooklyn. If My Bloody Valentine and The Ventures had a baby, it would be The Vandelles. Best song: “Lovely Weather”.

2. Franz Ferdinand – Tonight: Franz Ferdinand – Franz Ferdinand’s third album bursts with infectious disco beats, cheeky lyrics, swagger and confidence. Not that Franz ever lacked any of those, but Tonight channels these elements with such steadfastness that it’s impossible to not get caught up in the fun. Anyone with a pulse will be dancing to “Twilight Omens” and “No You Girls”.

1. The Warlocks – The Mirror Explodes – Okay, so this probably wouldn’t be the best Warlocks starter album. Go listen to Phoenix for that. But what The Mirror Explodes lacks in catchy singalongs, it greatly makes up for in intensely focused musical journeys through different levels of consciousness. Admittedly, it took me a few listens to warm up to the album because hell i LIKE those catchy singalongs, okay? But by listen number three I got it, and was absolutely blown away by how effectively these 8 tracks can delve into the innermost core of your subconscious. Although I think this is an album that needs to be listened to as one cohesive work, the standout track is undoubtedly “Standing Between the Lovers of Hell”.
