Avi Buffalo Full Spring Tour includes SXSW & Record Release show in LA

Long Beach, California’s own Avi Buffalo has announced a spring tour, including dates supporting Rogue Wave and Japandroids. The nearly two-month tour begins in Boston and concludes in Los Angeles with a record release show. Set for an April 27 release, Sub Pop will be releasing Avi Buffalo’s self-titled debut. The quartet will also be performing this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas. Tour dates below:

HOLY SHIT Y’ALL! Look at them Growlers! They look stunning in this performance. I can’t wait for them to go on their US tour and show the entire country what we in LA have been taking for graned far too long! If this little performance is any indication, the Growlers are going to continue to grow and take their ridiculousness and perfect live show to a whole new level and I can’t wait to see them do it. I have so much invested personally in this band – I saw them like 9 times last year! God damn! But, please, I beg of you – go see them…. They have NEVER disappointed live, not once. They are worth every dollar you need to pay to see them, you will get it back in dividends, I promise. GO. GO. GO.

INTRODUCING: Happy Birthday

If you haven’t heard of the wonderful man called KING TUFF, you haven’t been reading this blog enough. BUT, and this is a big but, he doesn’t play as King Tuff anymore which saddens his fans all over the world (aka Colette, myself, DML and The Uptown Bums) but he’s back with a new band. They’re called HAPPY BIRTHDAY, good luck searching that on Google, people in bands need to consider these things, no? Anyway, they’ve been around for a while most notably having played a whle 5 shows and having 0 songs on their myspace for a long time but now, they’ve fucking signed to Subpop! Can you believe that? Go King Tuff, go! But they’ve also released the tracklisting to their forthcoming debut which will come out in March. They’re playing SXSW and doing some dates with the Vivian Girls which will surely ensnare them a ton of fans. They’ve released the first track off their album called ‘Girls FM’ and not surprisingly it’s really good! It’s got that really gritty thing that Kyle Thomas (King Tuff) does so well but its a lot more melody driven and less bluesy and it’s got his signature caterwaul which I really, really love. Okay, so we all know that back in August, Black Lips played a one off show in Brighton on the 26th of August. I left for Brighton on the 28th of August. FUCK. Then, they played Los Angeles on September 5th. That’s less than one week after I left LA. They haven’t played in either place when I’ve been there and available since. FUCKING ASSHOLES. They’re also about to be in LA playing like 4 times in the next week. UGH. And now, they’ve announced a US tour, kicking off the first day of 2010 that I’ll be back in the US for a while…. however, I’ll be in Austin and these bitches will be in the South – then they will continue on North whilst I go back out West. FUCK. Well, see them if you can, or just feel empathy for me that I can’t see my fav band :(

A perennial favorite over here at NRBW, THE STRANGE BOYS, are touring again. They’re always touring, but they did take a teensy-weensy little break to record what will surely be an amazing follow-up LP to ‘And Girls Club’ which was one of my favorite records of the year. The first single, ‘Be Brave’, which is actually streaming over on their myspace (how old skool) is So. Good. and it kind of marks a new little direction for these kids to go in – they’ve got a new drummer and a sax player and Tim P. from Darker My Ruv on backing vocals…. So fuck yes, let’s go Strange Boys.

Surely you guys remember my favorite small Texas band who are going to be getting a lot bigger very soon, THE UPTOWN BUMS! I’ve talked about them a lot and saw them a buncha times when I still lived in Tejas, including an excellent show this year in the days between Psych Fest and SXSW in a well, bunker in Denton. If you like King Tuff, and it has anything to do with me, thank these guys for they turned me onto his music. Anyway, they’ve been doing some recordings which are turning out FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC, they’ve come a long way and are only getting better and now are going on tour! Yes! The Cribs Announce New US Tour, Release Video

The Cribs have announced details of their first full North American tour with Johnny Marr in the band, set to take place next January.

The band will take their ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ album Stateside by playing 14 dates on a gig run kicking off at the Chicago Lincoln Hall on January 13.

Adam Green will play support slots on the first part of the tour, up until and including the Austin show on January 23. Ex-Be Your Own Pet singer Jemima Pearl will support for the rest of the jaunt.

In LA in January? See Black Lips, Face My Wrath

Nu Rave Brain Wave’s utmost favorites, and uber obsession Black Lips are coming back into Los Angeles. It’s purported as more dates in support of their 2009 record, ‘200 Million Thousand’, but I have a feeling it’s just because they don’t know how to do anything but tour really. The last time they took a large break from touring, it was like 3 months, and two WHOLE weeks were devoted to recording the record. This time, unlike the last million times they’ve come to LA, they’ll be playing The Detroit Bar, The Glasshouse and The El Rey. Just kidding, those are the venues they always play because there are no good venues in Costa Mesa or Pomona for them to play and because they cannot play the Echoplex in LA anymore and they’re too small for the Fonda and the Fonda sucks.

January 22nd – The Glasshouse, Pomona, CA
January 23rd – The El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles, CA

Tickets for Detroit Bar are on sale and will probably go quickest, but there will be a special presale for the El Rey show on Thursday, October 5th at 10:00am. If you miss out, you can get tickets to see the Black Lips at the El Rey Theatre on Friday, October 6th at 10:00am and at 12:00pm noon for the Glass House show.

Fuck, I hope they tour the UK again really soon, I can’t fucking stand missing them 6 times in the course of 6 months, it’s completely unacceptable by my standards.

The Almighty Defenders CD, out September 22nd on Vice, brings together the Black Lips, King Khan and Mark Sultan. The latter two make up King Khan & the BBQ Show, which is the band that’ll be playing Brooklyn’s Bell House this Halloween (its an early show – 7:30pm doors / over by 10:30pm) (there’s a TBA late show at the same venue). Prizes for best costume. As you can see above, King Khan already has some ideas in mind. Tickets are on sale now.

Can’t make it Halloween? King Khan and BBQ are also playing Bowery Ballroom one night earlier (10/30). Ticket info TBA. Jay Reatard news including Watch Me Fall, Tour Dates, Jayumentary trailer
Jay Reatard’s new disc, Watch Me Fall, is out August 18th on Matador. NYC will get a free listening party for the album at (Le) Poisson Rouge on Monday, August 17th, while the West Coast gets a slightly better deal. Jay Reatard will be playing a series of free record shop in-stores from LA to Vancouver through the end of August. Those dates are below.

This September, Jay Reatard reunites with his first band, the Reatards, for a set at Goner Fest in Memphis.

On Thursday, October 1st (a few weeks before CMJ) he’ll headline a Shattered Records showcase (his imprint) at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Also on that NYC bill are Box Elders (who have other NYC dates coming up too), Useless Eaters, Hunx and Nobunny (both featured HERE). Doors are at 11:00pm. Tickets are on sale.
